BERLIN (AP) — 17 years old Renato Karl Bayern Munich took center stage as Bundesliga leaders fought back from a two-goal deficit to beat Freiburg 6-2 on Saturday.
In his ninth league appearance and second start, Karl delivered a timely message to Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann ahead of next year’s World Cup by inspiring Bayern’s comeback with goals, assists and brilliant displays.
Michael Oliseh was also active, scoring two goals and scoring three more.
Freiburg took advantage of Bayern’s passive start and within the first 18 minutes Yuito Suzuki and Johan Manzambi scored from a corner. It was the first time this season that Bayern were behind at home.
Karl responded four minutes later by controlling Olise’s ball with his left foot and scoring with his right, and the youngster returned the favor to Olise and equalized before the end of the first half.
The irrepressible Karl could have scored again after the break, but his attempt at goal was only canceled out after a VAR check for offside in the build-up.
Dayot Upamecano scored from Olise’s corner and Harry Kane added the top scorer in the league after the hour mark.
Karl was sent off to thunderous applause in the 71st minute after hitting his lower back, and Olise replaced Nicholas Jackson as number five in the 78th minute. Olise scored a goal in the 84th minute, scored by Hiroki Ito, making his first appearance this season.
Undav also demands attention
Despite conceding a penalty, Stuttgart forward Deniz Undav scored a hat-trick to earn a 3-3 draw with Borussia Dortmund.
Unduff was not included in Germany’s squad for the latest World Cup qualifiers, but he has scored five goals in his last two games for Stuttgart.
Stuttgart had the upper hand until Unduff conceded a penalty for a foul on Nico Schlotterbeck.
Emre Can converted a penalty in the 34th minute, and Maximilian Beyer added another before half-time.
Undahu grabbed a point after the break with a fine finish with their backs to goal and equalized in the 71st minute, before Karim Adeyemi equalized again for Stuttgart in stoppage time just when the hosts thought they had won.
Wolfsburg’s troubles continue
After launch coach and sports director Wolfsburg’s hopes for a fresh start during the international break ended with a 3-1 defeat at home to Bayer Leverkusen.
Borussia Mönchengladbach defeated Heidenheim 3-0 and Augsburg defeated Hamburger SV 1-0.
Eintracht Frankfurt then visited Cologne.
