COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — The Danish national team was hit with illness ahead of Tuesday’s final World Cup qualifier against Scotland.
Head coach Brian Reamer said two players and another member of staff were unwell, which could disrupt preparations for the crucial match at Hampden Park.
Joachim Andersen and Rasmus Høylund missed Denmark’s 2-2 draw with Belarus on Saturday, so the showdown with Scotland will decide top of Group C and automatic qualification to the World Cup. 1st place Denmark is 1 point behind 2nd place Scotland.
“We are in a situation where we need medical attention. This is the season for that to happen,” Riemer said in a quote reported by the Guardian. “You can’t protect yourself 100 percent, but we’re doing everything we can and our hope and assessment at this point is that we’ll resolve the issue and have 24 guys fit and ready to play on Tuesday.”
“Are you worried ahead of the Scotland game? Yes, if you ask me, I wish I hadn’t gotten sick and I wish I hadn’t gotten sick on Tuesday, of course that’s the answer.”
Scotland lost 3-2 to Greece on Saturday, missing out on a chance to pull away from group leaders Denmark.
