KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Current will begin a head coaching search as current coach Vlatko Andonovski shifts focus to her role as athletic director for the National Women’s Soccer League club.
Andonovski, who served in both roles with the team, will continue to coach until a successor is named, Current newspaper announced Friday.
The Current also reported that head of football operations Ryan Dell has been promoted to general manager. The move was part of a “long-term planning” staffing model in which these three key positions were held by separate people.
Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long said in a statement: “For the club to continue its upward trajectory globally, we need to put in place an organizational structure that reflects the growth of what we do within the KC Current ecosystem and beyond.” “These changes will enable us to further deliver on our mission to remain at the forefront of women’s football worldwide.”
Last season, in Andonovski’s second stint as manager, Current set NWSL regular season records for points (65), wins (21), home wins (11), road wins (10), shutouts (16) and fewest goals allowed (13).
Gotham FC eliminated Kansas City from the NWSL playoffs with a 2-1 victory in the quarterfinals last weekend.
“Moving into this role is crucial if we are to continue to grow this club with the aim of becoming a perennial contender on the world stage and a top developer of talent,” Andonovski said. “From world-class soccer to the world’s first stadium built exclusively for a women’s team to the best fans in the country, I’m proud of what we’ve built in this city that means so much to me.”
Andonovski coached the U.S. women’s national team for four years from 2019 to 2023.
