MADRID (AP) — The former president of Spain’s soccer federation was presenting his memoirs about the downfall of Luis Rubiales late Thursday when he was hit by an egg thrown by his uncle. Kissing players at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
Rubiales was sitting in a chair on a low stage and quickly spun around to avoid at least two eggs being fired at him. One of them splashed onto the screen behind him as he charged towards the small audience.
“The man who came in, I later found out, was my uncle. He was a troubled man, and always has been,” Rubiales told reporters. “He had some eggs and he threw them at me, but I didn’t know what he had in his hands. When I first saw him, I thought he had a weapon.”
