WOLVERHAMPTON, England (AP) — Rob Edwards has been tasked with staging Wolverhampton’s great escape in the Premier League.
Wolves hired Edwards as manager on Wednesday, replacing Vitor Pereira. who was fired On November 2nd, the team was at the bottom of the Premier League, still without a win.
That remains the case, with this being Wolves’ only game since Saturday’s 3-0 loss to Chelsea.
Edwards, who played for Wolves from 2004 to 2008 and was born nearby and is a fan of the club, will take over a side that is on a 15-game winless streak (11 of them this season). Wolves have just picked up two points but are already eight points from safety.
Edwards previously managed Luton Town in England’s top flight. He joined second-tier Middlesbrough on a three-year contract in June, but asked to leave after being approached by Wolves.
Middlesbrough are currently second in the table and Edwards is in his fourth spell at Wolves, swapping a relegation spot for a promotion race. First as a player and then twice as a youth coach.
Wolves chairman Jeff See said: “We need to revamp the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy and bring his own identity and ideas and we can build on that.” “We are entering a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key element in that.”
