MEXICO CITY (AP) — Federal infrastructure projects in Mexico 2026 world cup President Claudia Sheinbaum announced Monday that it will be completed in time for the start of the tournament in June.
The project includes the renovation of two terminals at Mexico City International Airport and the construction of a railway link between Mexico City and Felipe Angeles International Airport in Santa Lucía, approximately 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Mexico City.
The World Cup will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico and will feature 13 matches, five of which will be played in the capital. Guadalajara and Monterrey will split the remaining eight games.
The president said the federal government is investing 9 billion pesos ($489 million) in renovating Mexico City’s airport.
“This is not only a time to see the best soccer, but also a time to share with the world who we are, what Mexico is, not only a very culturally rich country, but also a country experiencing a historic moment,” Scheinbaum said at a press conference.
This is what happened to Sheinbaum Mexico’s first female president last year.
He added that other federal projects will also be implemented in Monterrey in northern Mexico and the western city of Guadalajara. These details will be announced in the coming weeks, she said.
The Azteca Stadium, which was to be the first venue to host the opening three World Cup matches, is closed for renovations, but the investment is being made by private companies. Sheinbaum declined to provide details about the project.
He said Mexico is expected to attract an additional 5.5 million visitors between the three host cities.
“It’s a very special time that will have a huge impact on the economy, but I think we’ll be ready in the next few months,” Scheinbaum said.
