MILAN, Italy (AP) – Zachary Atekame scored on a long-range drive in stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw with bottom club Pisa on Friday as Serie A leaders AC Milan faced bottom club Pisa, avoiding what would have been an unexpected outcome in previous Italian league seasons.
Atekame were about 10 yards outside the box when the ball was played immediately after a corner kick, but his low shot swung through traffic and curled inside the near post, denying Pisa their first win at Milan since 1981.
The newly promoted side are yet to win a game since returning to the top tier this season after a 34-year hiatus.
Milan went into the game as heavy favorites and took the lead after just seven minutes through Rafael Leán, but Juan Cuadrado equalized for Pisa an hour later with a goal from the penalty spot.
There could have been a big shock after Mbala Nzola controlled a long ball and slotted the ball under goalkeeper Mike Maignan to give Pisa the lead with five minutes remaining.
But Atekame’s goal in the third minute of stoppage time meant AC Milan went into this weekend’s games two points ahead of Inter, Napoli and Roma.
The points take Pisa to four points from nine games, one point ahead of Fiorentina and Genoa, which lifts them out of the bottom of the table.
