LONDON (AP) — Victor Goqueres ended a scoring drought with two goals in three minutes on Tuesday as Arsenal beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 to extend their perfect record after three Champions League games.
After nine games without scoring for club and country, the Swedish striker scored in the 67th and 70th minutes to halt Arsenal’s four-goal momentum in less than 15 minutes.
Gokeres signed for Arsenal this off-season after two prolific seasons with Sporting Lisbon, but has not scored since a 3-0 Premier League win over Nottingham Forest in September.
It was a fairly even match until defender Gabriel took the lead with a header from a free kick in the 57th minute. Gabriel Martinelli extended the lead for the hosts in the 64th inning, before Gokeres doubled to advance.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, “I’m happy (to acquire Gokeres) because he’s a player who deserves it.” “The amount of work he brings to the team is outstanding. We appreciate the many things he does for the team. He had the biggest smile on his face today.”
