VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — FC Dallas defeated Vancouver 2-1 on Saturday night, clinching seventh place in the Western Conference and denying the Whitecaps their first regular-season title, with teenager Kaike Ferreira scoring the first goal two minutes into the second half and rookie Michael Collodi converting the lead.
Vancouver (18-7-9) and expansion side San Diego FC each finished with 63 points, but the newcomers had a tiebreaker advantage. Dallas (11-12-11) avoided the wild-card round with the win.
The 19-year-old, known as Kike, scored his second goal in his 27th appearance, giving Dallas the lead for good in the 47th minute.
Collodi made six saves in his ninth career start with Dallas, four of which ended in clean sheets.
Yohei Takaoka of the Whitecaps finished with five saves.
Vancouver was forced into a man-down in the 11th minute when defender Matias Laborda was given a red card for a foul on Samuel Sarver.
Dallas took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute when Osaze Urhohide scored his second goal in his first season in the league after receiving a pass from Patrickson Delgado. It was Delgado’s sixth assist, doubling his rookie season total from last season.
Thomas Müller leveled the score at 1-1 in the 28th minute with a penalty after Emmanuel Sabbi fouled Lalas Abubakar. It was Muller’s sixth goal in six career games, five starts.
Vancouver started the day with a three-point lead over San Diego. The two clubs met in San Diego in late July and drew 1-1.
