Harry Kane scored again on Saturday as Bayern Munich beat Der Klassiker 2-1 as Borussia Dortmund suffered their first Bundesliga defeat of the season.
Defending champions Bayern showed their dominance and made a statement against their closest rivals after six matches.
Kane created his first opportunity while defending. He evaded two Dortmund forwards and sent the ball forward. Michael Olise drew a save from Gregor Korbel and then converted Luis Diaz’s shot from the rebound.
Kane scored in the 22nd minute, heading in a corner from Joshua Kimmich. It was his 22nd goal for club and country this season, extending his Bundesliga scoring streak to nine goals in five games.
Olise fired another shot that just missed the left post. Bayern’s only complaint at half-time was that they were only leading 1-0.
Dortmund improved significantly after the interval as Felix Nmeka went close to scoring, Selhou Ghirassy fired and Karim Adeyemi failed to capitalize on Kimmich’s rare mistake.
It didn’t really matter as Oliseh slipped in to deny substitute Jobe Bellingham’s goal-line clearance in the 79th minute, sealing the victory. The move started with a nice cross-field ball from Kane to Diaz.
Substitute Julian Brandt scored a goal immediately after coming on, but Kane defended the ball well and Bayern won their 11th consecutive match in all competitions.
Leverkusen won by 7 goals
Bayer Leverkusen almost lost a two-goal lead before beating Mainz 4-3, with Alex Grimaldo scoring twice and receiving a complaint.
Grimaldo converted a penalty, Christian Kofane added another point, and Lee Jae-sung gave Mainz a point back. Grimaldo scored again before the break, but was booked for clearly disagreeing with referee Florian Exner’s decision to award Mainz a penalty in the 69th minute when Philipp Mwene fell with minimal contact with Arthur.
Despite there being little evidence of a foul, the decision survived the VAR review and Nadiem Amiri scored from the spot against his former team.
Martin Telia thought he had sealed the victory for Leverkusen in the closing stages, but Amiri brought on Armindo Schieve to score in the 90th minute and ensure the end for the visiting side.
Leverkusen has now won three games in a row under new coach Kasper Urmand, who has returned to his old club. Hjormand had a rough time in charge of Mainz from 2014 to 2015.
Winner of the Poulsen Award
Leipzig held off promoted Hamburger SV 2-1 after the home fans honored Hamburg’s Danish forward Yussuf Poulsen with a huge TIFO in his first game back for his 12 years at the club. Leipzig were still in the third division when Poulsen joined from Ljungby in 2013.
Heidenheim drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen, Augsburg drew 1-1 with Cologne, and Christian Eriksen made his first start for Wolfsburg in a 3-0 home defeat to Stuttgart. Wolfsburg suffered their fourth straight Bundesliga loss and went winless in six consecutive league games.
