Why Levi Colwill should not be viewed as a long term left

Levi Colwill has been playing at left back for Mauricio Pochettino this season and even started there for Gareth Southgate’s England team against Australia last weekend.

I am not saying he has not done well, he has, but personally, I see his qualities being able to thrive much more at centre back due to his natural ball reading ability, his strength, ball progression, duel winning (on and off the floor) and the lack of need to be exposed in wide areas, where his lack of acceleration and sprint speed can be exposed more.

Me personally, I fear that against teams with explosive and direct wingers, for example Arsenal with Bukayo Saka this weekend, Levi could struggle to track them and constantly defend in wide areas.

He is a top tier talent so perhaps he will prove me wrong and become a viable long term left back option, but I want to see him and Benoit Badiashile make up the starting centre back roles in the near future, with Marc Cucurella getting a chance to stay as a starter in his natural left back position.
