Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s tenure as co-owner of Manchester United has not brought the immediate victories many supporters had hoped for. However, the British billionaire has outlined the long-term foundations established under his leadership, which he believes will bear fruit in the future.<\/p>\n
Ineos chief executive Mr Ratcliffe, 72, was given the green light to buy nearly 30% of United for \u00a31.3bn in December 2023 after an extensive bidding war. Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani, the son of Qatar’s former emir, was reportedly the main competitor in the process.<\/p>\n
The lack of immediate results under Ratcliffe’s leadership may have left some supporters wondering what might have been had Sheikh Jassim won his offer instead. Nevertheless, the Qatari businessman had previously made his intentions clear during the ownership dispute.<\/p>\n
In a manifesto released during the bid, Jassim and his representatives outlined the main goals for revitalizing the club. Their vision was primarily focused on upgrading the facility to a state-of-the-art level and emphasized that the acquisition would be debt free.<\/p>\n
“The bid plans to restore the club to its former glory,” they said in a statement. \u201cThe bid will be made completely debt-free through Sheikh Jassim’s Nine Two Foundation and will seek to invest in the football team, training center, stadium and wider infrastructure, fan experience and the communities the club supports.<\/p>\n
“The vision of the bid is for Manchester United to be renowned for outstanding football and to be regarded as the greatest football club in the world.”<\/p>\n
In many ways, Sheikh Jassim’s ambitions and what Ratcliffe is trying to achieve at United are very much in line so far. Ratcliffe wasted little time implementing his blueprint for modernizing United’s infrastructure, including a \u00a350m overhaul of Carrington training ground.<\/p>\n
Renovations to the training facility had already begun before Ratcliffe arrived at the club. Nevertheless, the outdated amenities have long been recognized as an issue, with Cristiano Ronaldo publicly criticizing the club’s inaction on the issue after his second return.<\/p>\n

Proposals for a new 100,000-seater stadium are also progressing, with Mr Ratcliffe leading the discussions. Sheikh Jassim was in favor of buying United outright, rather than just taking a stake, and is believed to have had plans to upgrade the match venue.<\/p>\n
There is also the key issue of player reinforcements, with United having invested more than \u00a3400m into the team since Ratcliffe took over. Although this is one investment area that can yield quick results, Ratcliffe emphasized the importance of patience in a recent interview on the Times Business Podcast.<\/p>\n
“There are two sides to a football team: the business side and the sports side,” he declared on the debut episode of his podcast, which aired live Thursday. \u201cLike it or not, the biggest correlation between results and external factors is profitability: The more cash you have, the better teams you can build.<\/p>\n

“It’s like a Formula 1 car, the better you build the car, the faster you can go. The better the team, the better the football should be. So a lot of what we did in the first year was we spent a huge amount of time trying to put the club on a sustainable and healthy footing.”<\/p>\n
“If you look at our performance last year, we had the highest revenue ever. We were also the second highest profitable ever. In this run of results, we haven’t felt the full benefit of the restructuring that we’ve had, and we missed out on the Champions League. “These numbers will be even better. In my view, Manchester United will be the most profitable football club in the world, and I hope that a long-term, sustainable high level of football will emerge from this.”<\/p>\n
