MADRID (AP) – Montseme hoped to continue her job as coach of the Spanish women’s national team after leading it European Championship Finals<\/span> He says he doesn’t understand why her contract wasn’t extended last month.<\/p>\n“Things happen in football you don’t expect,” Tome said in an interview with Spanish radio, Cadena Ser. <\/p>\n
The Spanish Football Federation announced on Monday that Tom\u00e9’s contract has not been extended<\/span> She will be replaced by former player Sonia Bermudes. The announcement comes two weeks after Spain lost the Euro 2025 final to Britain in a penalty shootout. <\/p>\nTome, who took over the job after Spain won the 2023 World Cup, led Spain to last year’s first Women’s League title.<\/p>\n
Tome said he was surprised by the federal decision not to extend the contract, which expired at the end of the month. <\/p>\n
She said Federation President Rafael Luzan told her that if Spain worked out in Euro 2025, she would continue to take charge. <\/p>\n
“He has always shown a lot of confidence in me, but I’m a little disappointed with how everything was handled. He didn’t follow his words about continuity. He felt satisfied with my work,” Tome said. “It’s been hard to understand everything that’s happened since the final. I understand that the Federation wants to take a new direction, but that message wasn’t really clear to me. They gave me a different impression.”<\/p>\n
Goodbye message<\/h2>\n
Tome said he was not bothered by not receiving goodbye messages from players on social media.<\/p>\n
“I’ve received a lot of messages from them,” she said. “I felt very respected by everyone. I’m not worried if they posted online.”<\/p>\n
The decision to replace Tome, the first woman to coach a Spanish senior women’s team, was made by members of the federal board of directors. <\/p>\n
She was an assistant to former coach Vilda during the World Cup and was promoted to former Federation President’s fallout Lewis Luviarez’s unconsensual kiss<\/span> Player Jenni Hermoso.<\/p>\nTome has been criticized by some for not including Hermoso in her recent call-up, but she has always argued that it was a decision based on sports performance. <\/p>\n
“I don’t think it has anything to do with it,” Tome said. “Since I was appointed, they have allowed me to make decisions based on my sports standards. No one has told me to take this player. I didn’t have to send a list of players to the president.”<\/p>\n
