Chelsea are working on a surprise move for Jordan Henderson, putting them at the front of a line of Premier League clubs interested in signing him. Henderson, 36, has agreed to leave Brentford on a free transfer despite having one year left on his contract.<\/p>\n
The midfielder is currently injured after breaking his arm during England’s celebrations after their last-16 World Cup win against Mexico. Henderson remained in North America for the remainder of the tournament and continued to be a key figure in the locker room.<\/p>\n
His leadership and experience are part of the reason why Xabi Alonso is keen to take him to Stamford Bridge. The Athletic reports that Chelsea are the frontrunners to sign the former Liverpool captain.<\/p>\n
He added that several Premier League clubs were also interested in signing him. The interest comes after Chelsea began talks with Brighton to sign 35-year-old Danny Welbeck, further evidence of a change in transfer policy since Alonso took over.<\/p>\n

Last month, the Blues made an \u00a38m bid for Granit Xhaka after the Sunderland captain expressed his desire to reunite with Alonso, who played for Bayer Leverkusen. Sunderland flatly rejected the offer and Xhaka will remain.<\/p>\n
Henderson is seen as a replacement, with Alonso wanting an experienced head in midfield, but he also has a good relationship with Chelsea’s \u00a3117m signing Morgan Rodgers. The England international only joined Brentford from Ajax a year ago and previously played for Al Etifaq in Saudi Arabia before leaving Liverpool in July 2023.<\/p>\n
However, his influence off the pitch has also been praised. After England’s 6-4 victory over France in the World Cup third-place decider, England manager Thomas Tuchel revealed that the 35-year-old had inspired his team-mates with his powerful pre-match speech.<\/p>\n
“Jordan Henderson gave a very impressive speech today in the hotel and put this in the right framework and got everyone in the right mindset,” Tuchel explained. \u201cSo he was incredibly helpful today.<\/p>\n
