LONDON (AP) \u2014 New premier league<\/span> This season, the team plans to try to crack down on goalkeepers who appear to have disrupted the flow of games or pretended to be injured to give coaches time to instruct their players.<\/p>\nBritish Football Association<\/span> On Monday, it was announced that the move had been approved by World Soccer’s Rulemaking Committee.<\/p>\n“English Football has received approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to introduce a new goalkeeper injury trial for the 2026-27 season, as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain the pace and flow of the game.”<\/p>\n
The trial, which was “jointly won” by the Prolev, the FA, the Premier League, the English Football League, Women’s Super League Football and the National League, “will be carried out across the English men’s and women’s professional game and is designed to address situations where a goalkeeper injury disrupts momentum, delays a match or creates an opportunity for tactical guidance,” it said.<\/p>\n

In the case, the FA said that if a match is abandoned due to a goalkeeper’s injury, the head coach “must designate an outfield player to leave the pitch immediately. The designated player must leave the field for at least one minute after play resumes.”<\/p>\n
According to domestic media reports, if a coach does not nominate a player within 10 seconds after the referee indicates that the goalkeeper is available for treatment on the field, the captain of the goalkeeper’s team will be the player automatically selected.<\/p>\n
Exceptions include collisions and bleeding<\/h2>\n
The FA said the trial would be carried out with a number of exceptions, such as when a free kick is awarded for a foul on the goalkeeper and requires immediate medical treatment, when a collision between a goalkeeper and an outfield player requires attention, or when the goalkeeper is bleeding.<\/p>\n
According to the BBC, the first game in the trial will be Saturday’s English League Cup match between Tranmere and Rochdale.<\/p>\n
