Jermain Defoe’s time at Woking has come to a bitter end<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n
Jermain Defoe has resigned as Woking manager due to communication difficulties and missing important meetings, according to the club’s director of football.<\/p>\n
Former Premier League striker Defoe had managed just six games for the National League side before his departure was announced on Thursday. The 43-year-old, who took up his post at the end of March, said it was “impossible to continue” in the role.<\/p>\n
Defoe and Woking had “mutually agreed” to part ways after two pre-season friendlies, but their sudden split made headlines. Surrey’s director of football, Jody Brown, defended the club’s transfer policy on social media on Friday and has now issued a lengthy statement.<\/p>\n
In it, Brown makes some damning claims about Dafoe in an attempt to give fans “some clarity.” “Success as a player doesn’t necessarily translate into management or leadership,” Brown said.<\/p>\n

“We do not intend to discuss internal matters any further than necessary or to attribute responsibility,” he added before going into details. Mr Brown said he had sought information from Mr Defoe and his assistant Paul Bracewell after becoming aware of “growing concerns”.<\/p>\n
“To better understand the situation, I asked Jermaine and Paul for a brief report outlining the team’s current depth, recruiting goals and operational challenges, so that we could provide the necessary support and accelerate preparation for the season,” Brown explained. “That report was requested multiple times, but was never received.”<\/p>\n
“A meeting was then scheduled involving the director, manager, assistant manager and head of operations to review preparations for the season. Neither Germaine nor his assistants attended that meeting or any of the training sessions that day.”<\/p>\n
“During his tenure, Mr. Germaine has never communicated any serious concerns directly to me, so I will not speculate on his reasons.<\/p>\n

“Every football club faces challenges. Players want more playing time, better contracts and transfers. Media teams may want better facilities, medical departments may want more interns, strength and conditioning staff may want more gym space, parking attendants may want more coffee. But people don’t just not come.<\/p>\n
“This experience highlighted lessons for both me and the club, particularly regarding communication with Jermaine and his agents over the four months and six games that he was with us. Throughout that period, the club’s goal remained the same: to support the players and staff and give them every opportunity to make the project a success.”<\/p>\n
\u201cI wish Jermaine all the best in his future endeavors and thank him and his staff for their efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n
Defoe has been contacted by Mirror Football for comment.<\/p>\n
“Unfortunately, circumstances ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in that position,” he said in his statement Thursday. “I’m very proud of the work we’ve done so far,” he said, adding: “I’m really disappointed that the journey ended so soon.”<\/p>\n
