Egypt won 4-3 in a penalty shootout in Dallas and advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals.<\/p>\n
The Australians made a bold move by making a goalkeeper change with 120 minutes remaining, with former Arsenal shot-stopper Matt Ryan replacing Patrick Beach, who had been excellent throughout the game.<\/p>\n
The move did not pay off as Harry Soutard converted the first penalty of the penalty shootout, with youngster Lucas Herrington hitting the bar. This meant that Egypt only needed four of their five penalties as they scored with every effort.<\/p>\n
Mohamed Salah stepped up and scored a panenka before Hossam Abdelmaguid sent Ryan the wrong way to seal the victory for the Pharaohs.<\/p>\n
Salah said after the win: “This is history. I told the players before the match that this is the biggest stage they can play on. Enjoy it and don’t give in to the pressure. I’m glad we managed to play, but it was unlucky for them. I’m glad we were able to make history today.”<\/p>\n
The former Liverpool man is yet to decide on his next club but admitted his bold spot-kick was born out of a desire to inspire his team-mates. “If anyone’s going to do it, it’s me!” he said. “I had more experience than the others and I wanted to give them confidence. I made the decision at the last minute. I thought I had to do it.”<\/p>\n

Imam Ashour put Egypt ahead in just 13 minutes and maintained that lead at half-time, but Mohamed Hany scored an own goal for Australia after 55 minutes. The match continued like this for over an hour, as there was still a penalty to decide the outcome.<\/p>\n
Neither country had ever reached the last eight of a World Cup and the Egyptians were celebrating breaking new ground.<\/p>\n
Egypt had not won a World Cup since their first appearance in 1934, but they have now advanced to the last 16 and are likely to face heavy favorites Argentina, who will eliminate Cape Verde.<\/p>\n
