Chesterfield Coroner&#8217;s Court heard Mr Cusack, 27, feared stigma and ridicule at the club before he was found unresponsive at his home address in Horsley, Derbyshire, on September 20, 2023.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>In a written complaint sent by the family to Sheffield United, her father, David Cusack, said the women&#8217;s head coach, Jonathan Morgan, was at the &#8220;front line&#8221; and outlined the problems allegedly stemming from his relationship with Morgan. Read our privacy policy<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>The court was told that Ms Cusack&#8217;s life had become &#8220;unpleasant&#8221; while she was playing for Leicester.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Cusack said her daughter had &#8220;never met anyone like Mr. Morgan before,&#8221; including the way he &#8220;interacted with people.&#8221; Her father said she &#8220;bounced back on her feet&#8221; when she joined the South Yorkshire club in January 2019, where she began working part-time in United&#8217;s marketing team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>He said: &#8220;[She]was disappointed about the possibility of him coming back into her life. I&#8217;m going to say, &#8216;Look, things may have changed. It&#8217;s a new start for both of us.&#8217; I tried to be positive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>The inquest heard that Ms Cusack stopped being so strict about her healthy eating before she died, and her father added: &#8220;I think towards the end she lost motivation. She didn&#8217;t let herself go or anything like that. She was feeling unmotivated and depressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Mr Morgan, representing him at the inquest, asked Mr Cusack if he knew his daughter had left Leicester City after a hamstring injury limited her playing time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Mr Cusack said he believed his daughter&#8217;s failure to play for Leicester was due to a &#8220;personality mismatch&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"photo changeSpace\">\n<p class=\"withoutCaption\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.images.express.co.uk\/img\/dynamic\/1\/590x\/secondary\/7011203.jpg?r=1782769670815\" alt=\"Maddie Cusack\" title=\"Maddie Cusack\" width=\"590\" height=\"826\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"newsCaption\">Maddy Cusack played for Sheffield United <span class=\"caption\">(Image: The FA via Getty Images)<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>He also told the inquest that the &#8220;worst thing that could have happened&#8221; to Ms Cusack before she died was &#8220;the one thing she wanted&#8221; &#8211; to sign a contract to play football full-time in Sheffield.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>By the summer of 2023, Cusack said, his daughter was becoming &#8220;anxious&#8221; about signing with the club.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>&#8220;I knew she wasn&#8217;t very happy with how things were going. She got sick in July, and I think that was a result of the contract. That contract lasted for most of the summer. My own theory on that was, &#8216;If we don&#8217;t offer her a contract, she&#8217;s going to look elsewhere.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>He told the inquest that when Ms Cusack signed up to become a full-time player, she found it difficult because her training time clashed with her marketing job.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>&#8220;She was anxious and worried. How would she be able to juggle the two roles? She had less money than the previous year. She had lost her joie de vivre.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Asked about Cusack&#8217;s statement that she had &#8220;no future,&#8221; her father said: &#8220;She has to give up something. She can&#8217;t keep going like this. We thought she was depressed, not suicidal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>The inquest heard that United did not provide Mr Cusack with any psychotherapy or other support and that his doctor gave him a medical condition to take time off from work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Mr Cusack said his daughter, who was prescribed medication, felt she would be &#8220;removed&#8221; from the team if she used her mental health as an &#8220;excuse&#8221; and feared being criticized and ridiculed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Cusack added: &#8220;This would not be the first time an organization has stigmatized people who are not good enough to work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>The father told the court that on the night his daughter died, he found her upstairs in the family home before attempting CPR and calling an ambulance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"text-description\">\n<p>Mr Cusack told the inquest: &#8220;After she passed away, we wanted and still want those who were responsible to be held to account. &#8220;Rather than leave it as &#8216;too bad&#8217;, we wanted to find out what her problems were. I decided I wanted to write down the problems she told us and press charges. It was Mr. Morgan who was in the firing line. I wanted to clear up any grievances we had.
