MEXICO CITY (AP) \u2014 Fans at Mexico finals world cup<\/span> During Wednesday’s group stage match, they chanted a slur that has previously led to fines and other sanctions against the country’s soccer federation.<\/p>\n

The slur, which literally means prostitute in Spanish, was heard at the Azteca Stadium towards the end of the first half when Czech goalkeeper Matej Kovar took a goal kick.<\/p>\n

The chant cost Mexico hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines from FIFA. It became popular about 25 years ago and is used to intimidate goalkeepers when taking goal kicks.<\/p>\n

It became a hot topic in 2014 brazil world cup<\/span> It was heard in Russia during the 2018 World Cup, and again four years later in Qatar. This practice continues despite attempts by the Mexican Football Federation to stop it.<\/p>\n

Mexico had already advanced to the final tournament as Group A winners before their match against the Czech Republic. <\/p>\n
