super large tournament<\/span>has increased from 32 teams to 48 teams, changing the format of the competition and how teams are divided by tiebreakers in the group phase. <\/p>\nFor example, instead of the group phase being immediately followed by the round of 16 as before, there will be an additional knockout round with 32 teams. <\/p>\n
There is also a lifeline for teams to advance if they miss out on the top two spots in their respective groups. <\/p>\n
Here’s what you need to know about qualifying for the Round of 32.<\/p>\n
How to proceed from the group phase<\/h2>\n
Due to the expansion of the tournament, the World Cup will feature more groups and matches than ever before. By the end of the group phase, 72 games will have been played and 16 teams will have been eliminated.<\/p>\n
The top two teams in each of the 12 groups automatically advance, with the top eight teams then qualifying for third place.<\/p>\n
This is the first time since 1994, when just 24 teams competed, that the third-place team will have a lifeline. <\/p>\n
Match results before goal difference<\/h2>\n
For the first time in the World Cup, FIFA will prioritize head-to-head results when two or more teams are tied on points.<\/p>\n
The steps to determine the final standings if a tiebreaker is required are performed in the following order:<\/p>\n
\u2014 Results of head-to-head competition between the teams involved. <\/p>\n
\u2014 The goal difference between the teams in question.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Highest points scored in those matches.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Overall goal difference for all group games.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Highest score for the entire group.<\/p>\n
\u2014 Fewest number of red or yellow cards (including team officials) received during the group phase.<\/p>\n
\u2014 FIFA Rankings.<\/p>\n

Coaches, players and fans will evaluate what it takes to qualify as one of the top eight teams in the top three. Goal difference seems to be important here.<\/p>\n
For example, whether Scotland can advance out of the group stage for the first time in their history may depend on whether they can avoid a crushing defeat against Brazil. They won against Haiti in their first match, but then lost to Morocco.<\/p>\n
The third place team with the most points will advance, but if teams are tied on points, goal difference will be determined in the main tie-break, followed by goals scored, disciplinary record (red and yellow cards), and finally FIFA ranking.<\/p>\n
