Australia vs Turkey opening match<\/span>The Socceroos’ presumed starting goalkeeper was Matthew Ryan, a three-time World Cup veteran who entered the tournament as team captain.<\/p>\nInstead, coach Tony Popovich turned to 22-year-old keeper Patrick Veach, playing in his third international game.<\/p>\n
\u201cA few days ago, the manager and goalie coach pulled me aside and told me I was going to play,\u201d Beach said. “They put their trust in me and that gave me the confidence I needed to go out there tonight and do my job.”<\/p>\n
In the 30th minute, Beech made his first save in as many matches while the Socceroos held an unexpected 1-0 lead against Turkey, immediately vindicating Popovic’s bold decision.<\/p>\n
Turkey’s Abdulkerim Bardak\u00e7i fired a powerful long-range shot on goal, and Beech made a physical save to hit the ball against the post and run to safety.<\/p>\n
He made two more great saves in the second half, diving to deny Arda G\u00fcler’s free-kick from outside the box and parrying Kerem Akturkoglu’s shot from near the penalty spot.<\/p>\n
Beach finished with eight saves and no runs. The Sydney native played just two professional seasons before Ryan’s 16th season, both as a starting keeper for Melbourne City in the Australian A-League. <\/p>\n
Beech started the last friendly before the World Cup, a 1-1 draw with Switzerland, but did not feature in the other nine friendlies dating back to June 2025. <\/p>\n
“When you go out there, you’re in front of 50,000 people and how many (or more) people around the world,” Beach said. “Sometimes that happens, but at the end of the day, you just keep it simple. It’s a football game and it’s just two teams going at it.”<\/p>\n
The inexperienced goalkeeper kept his cool as Turkey controlled 72% of the ball and attempted 30 shots, eight of which were on target. Beach said he was nervous in the biggest game of his life, but was able to get through it thanks to the strong defense in front of him and the trust of his teammates and coaches.<\/p>\n
When asked about the decision to start Veach over Ryan, Popovich said, “This team was chosen to perform well.” “Regardless of the outcome, it was the right decision.”<\/p>\n
The upset win moved Australia into second place in Group D. US<\/span> Regarding goal difference. But more important than their place in the table, this victory marked one of Australia’s most impressive World Cup starts in decades. Much of the credit goes to the young goalkeeper.<\/p>\n“He seemed very comfortable on the big stage,” Popovich said of Beach. “He made the saves he had to make. The quality they had and the great free-kick he took, he was up to the task.”<\/p>\n
