As is customary at the World Cup, all 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the United States hosting games will host Fan Fests, or Fan Zones. The Associated Press counted about 78 fan fests sanctioned by the FIFA Host City Organizing Committee. <\/p>\n
But there are many others. About 20 Major League Soccer teams are hosting events related to the World Cup, and others are partnering with host city Fan Fests.<\/p>\n
These are designated areas, often located in parks or public squares, where fans can watch matches, eat and drink, enjoy entertainment, and purchase official merchandise. It’s also an opportunity for cities to showcase their local culture. <\/p>\n
However, this World Cup is different from previous World Cups. There are 48 teams. That means more matches over a longer timeline. Cities are already being strained by economic stressors such as inflation and gas prices. <\/p>\n
Cities received federal funding for the World Cup, but that funding did not cover all costs. As a result, some festivals are shortening their operating days, and others are charging for tickets, guaranteed admission, seats, or more elevated experiences like cabanas in the Houston heat. <\/p>\n
Mamdani and Hochul join together.<\/h2>\n
To ensure New Yorkers “don’t feel overlooked,” Governor Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani announced a free Fan Fest in each of the city’s five boroughs. A fan fest is also planned at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey.<\/p>\n
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, will be known as New York-New Jersey Stadium during the World Cup and will host eight games, including the final. <\/p>\n
“Every fan should be able to watch the best tournament on the planet without breaking their savings,” Mamdani said.<\/p>\n
Fee Waiver in Toronto<\/h2>\n
Concerned about the cost to the city, Toronto has floated plans to charge $10 for admission to official Fan Fests scheduled for Fort York and Bentway. However, there were protests.<\/p>\n
Currently, approximately 16,000 tickets will be free per day, but approximately 4,000 premium tickets will also be sold. Organizers said the fee was necessary to prevent overcrowding and ensure the event did not go over budget. <\/p>\n
“Toronto residents have already paid $180 million to host the games, and stadium tickets are prohibitively expensive for most,” Toronto City Councilor Josh Matlow said on social media. \u201cAt the very least, the event promised to residents of any means will be free and open to all, so that everyone can participate in the World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n
Big City Sprawl Festival<\/h2>\n
Big cities pose challenges for organizers, so there are not just one Fan Fest, but many. <\/p>\n
In Los Angeles, a massive fan festival will kick off at the LA Coliseum from June 11th to 14th, with tickets on sale for $10 each. Ten free Fanfests will then be held throughout the region from Burbank to Venice Beach on various dates throughout the tournament. <\/p>\n
The San Francisco Bay Area opted for a more grassroots approach, partnering with various groups, including the NBA’s Golden State Warriors, to host watch parties. The largest celebration will be held at the San Pedro Market Square in downtown San Jose, thanks to a partnership between the San Jose Earthquakes and the Bay Area Host Committee. <\/p>\n
In Mexico City, the official Fan Fest is being held in the Z\u00f3calo, the famous public square in the city center, but Mayor Clara Brugada announced plans for 18 other free community events where locals can watch the games.<\/p>\n
Major League Soccer capitalizes on this moment<\/h2>\n
The last time the United States hosted the World Cup in 1994, it led to the creation of Major League Soccer. Currently, each team in the league is holding its own “Soccer Celebration” festival in hopes of gaining excitement at the World Cup and attracting new fans. <\/p>\n
MLS has a record of 44 players from various national teams participating in the tournament. <\/p>\n
“Historically, we have seen an approximately 10-20% increase in interest in MLS after each Men’s World Cup in which the U.S. Men’s National Team competes,” said Camilo Durana, the league’s chief business officer. \u201cThe idea that this World Cup could be held on home soil in an expanded format and MLS played a very important role in terms of hosting it, we think it could have an even bigger impact, and that’s an opportunity for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
In Seattle, the Sounders of the National Women’s Soccer League and its partners unveiled a continuation of the city’s nautical history by installing a floating fan zone and soccer field on a barge off Pier 62 at Waterfront Park in Elliott Bay. <\/p>\n

Many Fan Fest concerts are free, but most are first-come, first-served and require advance registration. Paid premium seat options are also available. <\/p>\n
The lineup covers all musical styles and tastes. <\/p>\n
In Vancouver, British Columbia, the likes of Flo Rida, Ziggy Marley and M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce have performed at the city’s Fan Zone at the PNE Grounds at Hastings Park. <\/p>\n
Kansas City Fan Fest will feature performances by The Chainsmokers, Sheryl Crow, All American Rejects and more at the National World War I Museum and Memorial. <\/p>\n
