Liverpool have decided to sack Arne Slott and hope to appoint Andoni Iraola as his replacement. Slott was expected to remain in charge of the Reds despite a disappointing second season at the helm, but the Dutchman was replaced as manager.<\/p>\n
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, falling far short of glory after winning the title in their first campaign in the slot, failing to win a trophy. Slott still has one year left on his contract and it had previously appeared that he would remain in charge.<\/p>\n
However, owner Fenway Sports Group decided to sever ties with the manager after a postseason review. Iraola, who led the team to sixth place after leaving Bournemouth, is a top target to replace Slott.<\/p>\n
“Liverpool FC can confirm that Arne Slott has resigned from his position as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a replacement is underway,” the club said in a statement.<\/p>\n

Iraola has been in the spotlight for leading Bournemouth to an 18-game unbeaten run and qualification for the Europa League. Crystal Palace want the 43-year-old Spaniard to replace the departing Oliver Glasner, while Bayer Leverkusen are also in advanced talks with the player.<\/p>\n
Palace are thought to have given Iraola a deadline of this weekend to make a decision. Iraola is understood to want to remain in the Premier League after three seasons with the Cherries, and with the Reds set to qualify for next season’s Champions League despite their poor form, Liverpool could be an attractive opportunity.<\/p>\n
Liverpool have picked up just 60 points in the Premier League this season, a whopping 24 points fewer than they picked up in Slott’s debut season after arriving to replace Jurgen Klopp. In the 2025\/26 season, they lost 19 times in all competitions, and that total was at the hands of FSG.<\/p>\n
The statement added: “Ahne, who joined the club in June 2024, achieved his 20th league title in his first season at the club, finishing the 2024-25 season as LMA Manager of the Year and leading the team to the Carabao Cup final and the Champions League last 16.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe then oversaw a second successive Champions League qualification for the 2025-26 season, with the Reds also reaching the quarter-finals of that competition.<\/p>\n
“It goes without saying that this was a difficult decision for us as a club. The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC during his time with us has been important and meaningful, and above all a success for our supporters and ourselves.”<\/p>\n
\u201cTherefore, we could not be more grateful for everything he has accomplished, especially as it is underpinned by his work ethic, diligence and level of expertise, which further underscores our view that he is a leader in his field.<\/p>\n
“From the moment I first met Arne, it was immediately clear that he was someone who would not only accept responsibility, but embrace it. That was evident when he agreed to become head coach, when he led us to the Premier League title, and when we just finished a season that faced considerable challenges and burdens.<\/p>\n

“Nonetheless, the conclusions we have reached are built on the belief that it is best to reorient the team’s trajectory. It does not diminish the work Arn has done here or our respect for him. Nor is it a reflection on his talent. Rather, it points to the need for a different approach.”<\/p>\n
