WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand defender Tim Paine has become an unlikely soccer superstar after an Argentine influencer called on his followers to unite and make the little-known 32-year-old the game’s next “hero.” world cup.

Soccer influencer El Scalso, also known as Valen Scarsini, listed Paine as the least-known player at the World Cup, which was held in Canada, the United States and Mexico, based on his small number of followers on social media.

Payne had about 4,700 followers on Instagram earlier this week. Since El Scalso’s nomination, that number has grown at a rate of nearly 1,000 people every minute; Over 1 million By Friday.

Paine now has six times as many fans as New Zealand’s captain and most famous player, the Nottingham Forest forward. Chris Wood.

“There are only a few days left until the World Cup starts and we are all waiting to cheer on our national teams, but what if there was a player who could unite us all, a footballer that we would all root for, regardless of nationality?” Scarcini Said.

“We looked at all the national teams participating in the World Cup and looked for the least known player and analyzed them one by one and found him. New Zealand have Tim Paine in Group G. He’s really the least known. He doesn’t have 5,000 followers.”

Scalsini, who has more than 500,000 followers, implored his supporters to “start mentioning Tim Paine everywhere.”

“We have to start making videos featuring the legend of Tim Paine. If you have a World Cup (sticker) album, please upload a photo with his sticker on it. The goal is to see how many people know Tim Paine before the World Cup starts.”

spanish chorus

Now there are songs to support Payne, who made her debut at 18 and recently made her 50th appearance for New Zealand.

The chorus sings in Spanish, “I’ve got his back. I’m rooting for him. I’ve been rooting for him from the beginning. Tim Paine, from the cradle to the grave. You’re a crack. I’m rooting for you, every step of the way.” “No pain, no profit” follows.

Payne responded to his newfound social media fans on Friday.

“I was wondering why social is blowing up and I found your post,” he said. “Thank you for the love! Gracias, Hermano.

“First of all, I’d like to say a big thank you to Valen. It’s been a pretty crazy 48 hours to say the least. I also wanted to let you know that I’m extremely grateful to be able to represent my country and appreciate all the love from around the world.”

new zealand This is their third World Cup appearance, after qualifying in 1982 and 2010, but they have yet to win a match.

The national team known as the All Whites is Group G Belgium, Iran, and Egypt. New Zealand will open the tournament against Iran in Los Angeles on June 15.
