Southampton captain Taylor Harwood-Bellis has insisted he would not have mocked Spygate if he had understood the seriousness of the situation. The former Manchester City prospect made the binoculars gesture after scoring a dramatic late goal in Saints’ Championship play-off semi-final victory over Middlesbrough.<\/p>\n
Coach Tonda Eckert’s team were expelled from the competition for violating English Football League (EFL) rules, and their appeal was rejected. Southampton defeated Boro 1-0 in extra time to book a place in the play-off final against Hull City. However, the dispute between the two men was marred by suspicions of spying by the Saints.<\/p>\n
The South Coast organization was subsequently indicted, admitted to the offenses, and confessed at a hearing this week to two further instances of espionage early in the operation. The independent committee kicked the club out of the play-offs and reinstated Boro, securing four points for next season. Southampton appealed but their hopes of overturning the verdict were dashed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Harwood-Bellis was forced to retract his actions after the independent commission’s ruling left both him and his team “heartbroken, disappointed and heartbroken”.<\/p>\n
In an Instagram post, he said: “It was nothing short of an honor to leave this team and on behalf of all the fans watching in the stands, so it feels right to speak directly to you all about what happened this week. As players, we are completely disappointed, disappointed and heartbroken that this has happened.”<\/p>\n

“We worked hard as a group to give our fans the football they deserved. Having been caught up in relegation, that only gave us the impetus to come back. We know what it feels like to play in the Premier League and were driven by the belief that we could give it to you.<\/p>\n
“I also want to put it on record that if I had known the seriousness of the situation, I would not have done this on the pitch. At this point, as a player, I was unaware of the situation and it was just for fun.”<\/p>\n
“As fans, you all have been incredible. Our undefeated record was fueled by your passionate support. We didn’t start the season the best, but you still supported us and believed in each and every one of us.”<\/p>\n

The controversy emerged seven years after the Leeds United spying scandal shocked the world of English football, but Southampton’s attempts to gain an unfair advantage proved to be equally damaging to the integrity of the sport and brought the game into disrepute.<\/p>\n
New reports have emerged in the wake of the spying scandal, with Southampton allegedly disguised in Eastleigh colors while Ipswich Town prepare at the National League side’s Hampshire base for their clash with the Saints in April.<\/p>\n

Saints confessed to spying on Oxford United before last year’s encounter, but it proved to be in vain as they ultimately lost 2-1. Eckert has come under intense pressure following the independent commission’s ruling and is currently being investigated by the Football Association (FA), as well as facing the possibility of being sacked for allowing covert operations.<\/p>\n
It emerged on Wednesday that Southampton players are considering legal action if their appeal against their sending off is rejected on the grounds of loss of income. Players were reportedly stripped of financial rewards such as promotion bonuses and salary increases.<\/p>\n
“Southampton Football Club was informed this evening that the EFL’s League Arbitration Panel has upheld the sanction imposed earlier this week. As a result, the club will not take part in Saturday’s Championship Play-Off Final,” Southampton said in a statement after the appeal was rejected.<\/p>\n
