Manchester United’s veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton is set to sign a one-year contract extension to remain at Old Trafford for the 2026-27 season.<\/h2>\n

Tom Heaton is set to sign a one-year contract extension to remain at Manchester United for a sixth season, and the veteran goalkeeper’s presence in the squad will help the club meet the Champions League qualification requirements.<\/p>\n
The former Burnley and England goalkeeper celebrated his 40th birthday last month and is considered a valuable member of United’s dressing room and standard setter in training, despite not having played for the first team for more than three years. Heaton also coached Senne Ramens in his first Belgian Premier League game. Altay Vaindir is set to leave Old Trafford this summer, with Andre Onana set to follow him after a season on loan at Trabzonspor. This means Heaton remains their third-choice keeper, giving United some continuity. Heaton came through United’s youth ranks before leaving the club in 2010 without making a single appearance, before returning. He is eligible as a homegrown player and will help United fill the club’s 25-man squad for their return to the Champions League.<\/p>\n

UEFA rules state that each team must have at least eight ‘association-trained’ players in their 25-man list, of which at least four must be ‘club-trained’. To be eligible, a player must have spent three consecutive seasons with the club between the ages of 15 and 21. Heaton, Luke Shaw and Amado are the only players who qualify as having been developed by the club, while Koby Mainu is eligible for List B under UEFA’s team rules as a player who was born on or after 1 January 2005 and spent at least two years with the club in the 2026\/27 season. Amad has been classified as a homegrown player by the Premier League this season and must qualify under UEFA regulations. Harry Maguire and Mason Mount would be classed as Association-trained players.<\/p>\n
Heaton was one of four players United filled into their Europa League spots last season, along with young goalkeeper Dermot Mee, Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford. Mee will remain at the club, but Evans has retired and Rashford is likely to be sold this summer.<\/p>\n
As for other freshmen, Toby Collier and Radek Vitek, two players who spent the season on loan in the Championship, will be eligible for United.<\/p>\n

However, Vitek is keen to continue playing regularly after a fine season at Bristol City, and there should be no shortage of suitors this summer if United are unable to convince him to be their number two. United could name fewer than the required eight freshmen, but that would reduce the size of the squad they could submit. Therefore, if only six players were included instead of eight, the team cap would be 23 instead of 25. Heaton brings a wealth of experience to the dressing room and is a sounding board for captain Bruno Fernandes, while Casemiro praised his influence last week. “First of all, he promotes training,” Casemiro said on the Rio Ferdinand Meets podcast. “He pushes in training every time. He pushes before the game, in the game. Of course he doesn’t play, but he pushes every time,” he then explains his experience. He speaks English very well so I will explain. But for me, every room needs one Tom. Every room needs this guy because he helps the room (a lot). \u201d<\/p>\n
