Carrick, who led the club to third place in the Premier League, is expected to be announced as United&#8217;s permanent head coach soon. Carrick has enjoyed great success since coming on as an interim replacement for Ruben Amorim, qualifying for next season&#8217;s Champions League.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The 44-year-old will be given the chance to continue the rebuilding of the club, which he won in 11 of the 16 games he has played as manager and for whom he represented more than 400 times as a player. United are widely expected to have a busy transfer window this summer, with their return to European football&#8217;s elite competition now assured. And Neville warned that the Red Devils could be quickly ravaged by injuries next season without major investment, insisting Carrick&#8217;s side needed quality reinforcements if they were to face serious challenges on multiple fronts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Michael Carrick&#8217;s squad at the moment is paper thin. If two or three players get injured, it will collapse quickly,&#8221; he explained on the Gary Neville podcast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Teams are under a lot of stress by playing three times a week. Some players are more prone to injury, some players are more fatigued, and that&#8217;s inevitable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>He added: &#8220;In an ideal world we would bring in three defenders. They need one who can play in two positions and support them (like Pierrot Hincapie or Ben White at Arsenal) and then they need another top centre-back and a left-back. I think three defenders would be perfect.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIn that case they would need two midfielders, but in an ideal world I would think five would be perfect. If they were really greedy they would swap Mason Mount for another forward of some kind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cOr maybe someone like Mason Mount, because you have to think about the fact that Bruno (Fernandes) is irreplaceable and half Mason Mount does a little bit of that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a player who can play in the wide areas and maybe even wear the number 10 on his back at times. Guys like (Phil) Foden, (Cole) Palmer and (Ryan) Cherki. He&#8217;s a flexible forward who can play the number 10 if for some reason Bruno Fernandes is not available.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Neville went on to stress that United need to prioritize securing two elite central midfielders and a quality central defender as an absolute minimum to give Carrick the best chance of continued success in the position.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The former Middlesbrough manager is expected to pen a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Neville continued: &#8220;I want six players there, but I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;m being greedy. What matters is how much these players cost and how smart Manchester United are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;Absolutely obvious is the top centre-back and the two top central midfield players. Absolutely obvious.
