WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) – Former Canadian women’s soccer coach Bev Priestman has had immediate success since returning from a one-year suspension for her role in the drone spying scandal at the 2024 Olympics, leading the Wellington Phoenix women to the Australian A-League final.<\/p>\n
The Phoenix lost 3-1 to Melbourne Victory in Saturday’s final, but it was a significant improvement compared to the team’s previous four A-League seasons. They finished last in the 11-team league their first two seasons and eighth and ninth the following two seasons.<\/p>\n
The role of Phoenix will be the British-born priest’s first role since the cathedral was completed. 1 year suspension from FIFA<\/span> \u201cAggressive conduct and violation of the principles of fair play.\u201d<\/p>\nPriestman led the Canadian women’s team to a gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Two behind-the-scenes staff members from the Canadian team were sent home, and Priestman voluntarily resigned<\/span> From the coaching staff from the first game. She was subsequently dropped and suspended from Canada Soccer, and as a result of an investigation. she was fired from the role<\/span>.<\/p>\nPriestman found a chance for redemption far from home in New Zealand, where he was offered the chance to return to a coaching role on a two-year contract. At her first press conference in New Zealand, she thanked Phoenix for “believing in me to return to the game”.<\/p>\n
“For me, coming back felt like the right choice. Today is a good day.”<\/p>\n
After the final, Priestman said he enjoyed his first season back in soccer.<\/p>\n
“I’ve seen people do their best when they’re hungry,” she says. Losing in the final “left us with a little bit of responsibility. And in many ways, it could help us go to another level next year. I have an ambitious club.<\/p>\n
“I’m at my best at this moment. Hunger, desire to move forward. I think everyone will show that right now. Come preseason, you’ll see what was going on.” <\/p>\n
