Ollie Watkins’ two goals in the second half defeated Liverpool and Aston Villa qualified for next season’s Champions League. Liverpool will be fighting for a place in the top five with another disappointing result.<\/p>\n
Watkins’ double gave Unai Emery’s side the best possible preparation for next week’s Europa League final. Morgan Rodgers gave Villa the lead just before half-time, but then Virgil van Dijk brought Liverpool back into the tie.<\/p>\n
Van Dijk added honor to the scoreline with his second goal of the night, after John McGinn added further sparkle to a memorable night with a superb fourth goal in the final minute.<\/p>\n
Rodgers produced the first magical moment of the game to take the lead. On a corner routine he had the ball on the left side of the box and the playmaker spread himself wide open to score the first goal of the night.<\/p>\n
Seven minutes into the second half, Van Dijk leveled the score with a header despite a VAR review. The Dutchman scored from a free-kick and replays showed Matty Cash pushing him slightly, but it wasn’t enough to choke it out as the visiting team got an equal score.<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Rio Ngmoja cut in from the left and curled a shot that was good enough to beat Emi Mart\u00ednez, but he was inches away from giving the Reds the lead.<\/p>\n
Villa quickly recovered to take the lead after the Hungarian slipped on a routine throw-in to Dominik Szoboszlai, passed the ball to Rodgers, and a single pass to Watkins saw the Englishman open the scoring.<\/p>\n
The hosts had a number of chances to extend their lead, but they were wasted as Emi Buendia’s shot was blocked by the woodwork and his last pass betrayed them.<\/p>\n

There’s a reason Rodgers has been involved in discussions about being England’s main playmaking option this summer. Villa’s ace continues to go from strength to strength and plays with the confidence befitting someone capable of taking center stage for his country.<\/p>\n
Rodgers starred in a number of matches, leading Villa to victory and was the man who broke the deadlock at Villa Park. He was a central cog in the corner routine, holding onto the ball and leaving a chance to turn in the first goal – a chance he duly seized. His fascinating rise shows no signs of slowing down.<\/p>\n

Credit to Emery, who played with a full team for Friday night’s game. However, with a top-five spot not yet secured, he had few options. However, there is no doubt that all eyes will be on Villa when they face Freiburg in the Europa League final next Wednesday.<\/p>\n

It took 24 minutes for the Sky Sports cameras to show Harvey Elliott in the stands. Watching games rather than playing has become the norm for the young playmaker, who moved to Villa Park on loan this summer after being named player of the match at the Under-21 Euros.<\/p>\n

The Cherries are well aware that either Liverpool or Villa will have to drop points and will have been keeping an eye on this game for a week now based on their progress. Andoni Iraola are aiming high, and while those heights may end with Champions League football, their task remains difficult.<\/p>\n
Liverpool dropped points on Friday night, but Bournemouth still have a chance to face Manchester City. Their impact on the league table is huge and they have a chance of qualifying for Europe, but they also give Arsenal the Premier League title.<\/p>\n
