Bruno Fernandes has said he is “sorry” to Jamie Carragher after bringing up England’s penalty miss against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup. During an interview with Wayne Rooney, Fernandes recalled as a boy celebrating the moment when Ricciardo saved Carragher’s spot-kick from Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the quarter-final shoot-out.<\/p>\n
The Liverpool legend initially converted a penalty, but was forced to take it again without waiting for the referee’s whistle. Ricardo won the second time, giving Portugal a place in the semi-finals, but they lost to France in the end.<\/p>\n
Rooney was sent off early in the game for stomping on Ricardo Carvalho, and Cristiano Ronaldo infamously winked at his Manchester United teammates as he left the pitch in Germany. Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Fernandes explained: “Obviously everyone remembers 2006 because of that little bit of heat between Cristiano and Wayne.”<\/p>\n
“(It resulted in) Jamie Carragher missing a penalty. I had to say this, but I’m sorry, Jamie,” the United captain admitted before facing the cameras.<\/p>\n

“I had to run you off a little bit and you always corner me. I can run you in with that penalty. When I miss a penalty, don’t say anything about it.”<\/p>\n
In 2021, Carragher expressed his heartbreak after being subjected to a vile racist abuse after Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford missed penalties in the Euro 2020 final. The former Liverpool centre-back said in a column for the Telegraph: “Sven-Goran Eriksson called me up and gave me one job, and that was to take convincing spot-kicks, just like I did in every training session.”<\/p>\n
“I hadn’t missed a penalty in six weeks. ‘You’ll take the fourth one,’ Eriksson told me. There was no problem. England were 2-1 down when I walked 40 yards, but I was looking at Portugal’s number one Ricardo and feeling confident.”<\/p>\n

“I knew exactly where to put the ball, so I hit it sweetly to the right, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. That was my first touch of the game. There was a moment of relief, and then the referee blew his whistle. The Argentine referee, Horacio Marcelo Elizondo, said I had taken the ball too early.”<\/p>\n
“Take 2. Now I was bluffing with Ricardo. Ricardo had incorrectly guessed that I would aim for the goal in exactly the same way. I changed my mind and went to the left. He did the same and pushed my attempt away.”<\/p>\n
