Diego Gomez suffered a serious injury while playing for Brighton & Hove Albion against Tottenham Hotspur a few months before this summer’s North American World Cup.<\/h2>\n

Diego Gomez left the pitch in tears after sustaining a serious injury during Brighton & Hove Albion’s Premier League match against Tottenham Hotspur. The Paraguayan international looked a little distressed as he landed awkwardly after attempting a header, perhaps because this could be a serious setback before the World Cup.<\/p>\n
Gomez, 23, saw his left leg break under his weight after reaching the highest point on the halfway line. Danny Welbeck came to support his stricken team-mate.<\/p>\n
The midfielder limped away in pain after Brighton staff helped him out. Karo Mitoma was brought on in place of Gomez in the 20th minute.<\/p>\n

Sky Sports co-commentator Alan Smith said at the time: “It’s obviously a genuine injury and you feel bad for him, but perhaps the suspension won’t hurt Brighton too much. The introduction of Mitoma shouldn’t unduly upset them. It’s the same form.”<\/p>\n
Former Spurs player Andy Reid told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Gomez is doing great. I hope it’s not too serious but there’s distress on his face and he doesn’t look well.”<\/p>\n
After Pedro Polo had given Tottenham the lead, Mitoma equalized for Brighton just before half-time. The substitute’s first volley shot past goalkeeper Antonin Kinski.<\/p>\n

That impact helped soften the blow for Brighton. But that will be little consolation for Gomez and Paraguay, who are less than two months away from the start of the World Cup.<\/p>\n
He scored his third international goal against Greece during the last international break, which led to the win. Gomez also played the full 90 minutes in a friendly against Morocco in March.<\/p>\n
The midfielder has started all six games since last September’s World Cup qualifiers and currently has 23 caps. He also scored Paraguay’s second goal in the 2-2 draw against Japan.<\/p>\n

The Paraguayan also provided an assist in Danny Welbeck’s opening game against Liverpool at Anfield. Gomez has started each of Brighton’s last eight league games.<\/p>\n
