If there’s one advantage Liverpool have against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarter-final second leg, it’s definitely the draw being played at Anfield. When the Reds’ iconic home is in full voice, it has been known to turn some of football’s biggest clubs into trembling disasters.<\/p>\n
Manager Arne Slott will need the full force of Anfield in his squad on Tuesday night, with Liverpool needing to overturn a two-goal deficit against the reigning European champions. The Reds have struggled this season, but the power generated from all four corners of the L4 can turn a middling season into a memorable one.<\/p>\n
Liverpool have already overturned one draw in the Champions League this season, defeating Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield despite losing by a point. So what exactly is PSG up against? So, where do you start?<\/p>\n

Perhaps in 1977, when Liverpool overcame a 1-0 deficit against France’s Saint-Etienne to reach the European Cup semi-finals. Rumor has it that the stadium changed slightly due to the noise level that night.<\/p>\n
That wouldn’t be so far-fetched. Scientists at the University of Liverpool discovered that Anfield registered a maximum magnitude of 1.74 on the Richter scale last season when the Reds beat Tottenham Hotspur 5-1 to win the Premier League title. Professor Ben Edwards said: “Their enthusiasm was so powerful that it literally moved the earth.”<\/p>\n
And there are some nights that young fans still cherish. Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Chelsea in the 2005 Champions League semi-final is often regarded as the club’s greatest night ever.<\/p>\n

Jose Mourinho, who was the Blues manager at the time, took the Blues to Merseyside after drawing the first leg in west London. Rafa Ben\u00edtez’s side secured the win with Luis Garcia scoring the only goal of the game four minutes later.<\/p>\n
A few years later, Mourinho said: “The only time I’ve seen a goal scored in a stadium was in the Champions League semi-final in 2005… They made so much noise when they scored. You could feel the power of Anfield, it was amazing.”<\/p>\n

The dizzying twist to that night is the famous clash with Barcelona in May 2019. The Catalan giants, led by Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first leg at Camp Nou.<\/p>\n
The draw looked dead until Anfield came back to life and the Reds beat Barcelona 4-0 to reach the Champions League final and beat Spurs.<\/p>\n
Bar\u00e7a legend Xavi said: “The fans stayed throughout the game and didn’t stop clapping for the team. I couldn’t believe it. I was speechless.”<\/p>\n
Arsenal hero Thierry Henry faced the full force of Anfield’s attack in a memorable quarter-final in 2008 as the Reds snatched an equaliser, winning 4-2 and progressing to the semi-finals.<\/p>\n
“In my first years at Arsenal we didn’t do well there (Anfield) but we improved,” he said. “I love the atmosphere. It’s unbelievable. I’ve played in many stadiums, but for me there’s nothing like playing at Liverpool.”<\/p>\n
Kevin De Bruyne, who lost the Champions League quarter-final between Manchester City and Liverpool in 2018, said: “I love Anfield, I love it very much. I love when people like you, I love the noise. That’s what it’s all about. I love the passion of football.”<\/p>\n

PSG manager Luis Enrique is well aware that Anfield will be a major obstacle for his players. After the first-leg win, the club’s Spanish manager said: “We know it’s going to be really difficult to play at Anfield. That’s what we’ve always done as players and as coaches. We’re going to suffer and we know that. Now it’s time to recover and prepare for the game in the best possible way.”<\/p>\n
Goals from D\u00e9sir\u00e9 Duet and Hvi\u010da Kvaratscheria gave the Ligue 1 giants huge momentum heading into the second leg. Last season, PSG defeated Liverpool on penalties in the Champions League last 16 at Anfield.<\/p>\n
Arne Slott knows Liverpool will need the loudest Anfield ever if they have any hope of winning silver this season.<\/p>\n
After losing the first leg in Paris, Slott said: “We need to perform better.” “(We) definitely need the cooperation of our fans to create an atmosphere where we can rise to a better level than today.”<\/p>\n
