England’s final international break before Thomas Tuchel selects his provisional World Cup squad was undoubtedly a disappointing one. A late draw against Uruguay and then a crushing defeat against Japan left the Wembley crowd demoralized and upset at the prospect of the Three Lions going all the way to the end in tougher conditions in America this summer. England created few clear-cut chances and had eight shots on target in two games, fewer than in their previous qualifying match, which they won away in Albania in November last year (10).

The absence of players such as captain Harry Kane and dependable midfielders Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Reece James was keenly felt against Uruguay and Japan. Both will likely start on the right wing if they are fit in the summer. After Tuchel named 35 players in his first team, many players failed to step up and get their chance. Express Sport looks at the 10 people who shouldn’t be on the plane and the others who are at real risk of missing out on the final group of 26…

It was a dramatic return to the England fold for White, who scored against Uruguay despite being booed and also conceded a penalty. He was unlucky in that respect. However, Japan took advantage of the space at the back to score the only goal of the match, but White was not nearly enough with the ball in attack. He has not been able to earn a spot in the team in these two games.

The 35-year-old doesn’t have a senior cap to his name, but this omission requires little explanation. However, Steele is still likely to actually play in the World Cup. However, not as one of the team’s three keepers, but as a shot-stopper in training.

James Trafford is the future, so he gets the third spot behind Jordan Pickford, while Aaron Ramsdale has only made nine Premier League starts compared to Dean Henderson’s 29. This trio makes sense even though Ramsdale has played in the last three major championships.

He hasn’t had a cap since September 2022. And although he lost his place at Newcastle to Ramsdale, he had already insisted he should miss out on Ramsdale. Next!

He was called up as a substitute in November, but has not played since the loss to Senegal in June last year. The brutal truth is that he is simply worse than England’s other centre-back options.

A very good player who won four caps under manager Thomas Tuchel. But he didn’t start either, and he hasn’t been on the team for the past four games, even though this is an expanded team. In effect, Gibbs White shouldn’t be going to the World Cup.

The 33-year-old Newcastle defender has been a regular in Tuchel’s side since making his debut as Germany manager in March last year. He’s certainly a set-piece threat. However, England have better options at both centre-back and left-back.

He has scored 14 goals and provided five assists for Newcastle this season, but his only hope of qualifying for the World Cup is if there is an injury. His best chance of going was undoubtedly via Scotland, but he rejected that route.

He won’t be playing against Tottenham in the World Cup, so no further logic is needed. No, he is a very talented footballer, but he has started just 16 games in the Premier League, with five of his six goals coming against Spurs. Despite being a wizard, Eze’s limited playing time at Arsenal is working against him when it comes to attacking competition.

The former Liverpool defender made a good decision to go to Germany to play for Bayer Leverkusen and has been playing every week. However, he is still below the other senior centre-halves in the competition. However, things could be different for Euro 2028.

Ben White scored his first England goal, but overall it was a disappointing result. (Image: Getty)

It wasn’t a good start for the Manchester United midfielder, his first start for England since September 2024. He was disrupting the pace defensively. There is also a possibility that he will be absent in favor of James Garner.

He should be on the plane. But it’s also not an absolute guarantee. Chelsea’s talisman did not perform well in the match against Japan, and due to injuries, he is a shadow of the player he was two years ago. And there are plenty of attack options. There are grounds for him to miss out, but given his talent he should be safe. just.

As above. Like Palmer, Foden should be there, just based on talent and potential. However, things were not that simple, and there were often questions as to whether Man City’s manager was producing enough players to represent England.

The fact that he was not in the original 35-man squad when Reece James went out injured and was not called up as a substitute when Jarrell Quansah, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Harvey Barnes were absent says it all.

The AC Milan defender is aiming to become the fourth choice centre-back, following Marc Guéhi, Ezri Konsa and Harry Maguire. If John Stones is suitable, he may get the nod instead.

Phil Foden could be paying the price for a shaky season. (Image: Getty)

If Tottenham want to become number two in America behind Harry Kane, they need to help avoid relegation to the Premier League with some goals. The 28-year-old has only 135 minutes left for England, but he probably still has an edge over the next…

In the match against Uruguay, he missed a great scoring opportunity. After Kane, only Mason Greenwood and Danny Welbeck have scored more goals than Calvert-Lewin in Europe’s top five leagues this season. However, he is still very uncertain about his position in the top 26.

He’s the biggest name on this latest team after Trent. Watkins was a semi-final hero at Euro 2024 but has struggled for Aston Villa this season, admitting recently: “I haven’t been feeling very well.” He was also absent from the November squad due to a knee injury. Form execution is required.
