Liverpool have announced that they will be increasing the price of general admission tickets for the next three seasons. The news comes despite Arne Slott’s side’s disastrous Premier League title defence, which sees them currently sitting in the top five after 31 games.

The Reds’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League are in jeopardy after last weekend’s disastrous 2-1 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, leaving them just one point behind sixth-placed Chelsea. But ticket prices are set to rise despite a tough season and no guarantee that they will qualify for Europe’s elite competition next season.

Liverpool have announced that adult general admission ticket prices will increase by between £1.25 and £1.75 per person on each match day, with adult season ticket prices for next season increasing by between £21.50 and £27.

Meanwhile, junior and local general tickets will be frozen at £9 each.

In other regions, the age limit for young adult tickets will increase from 21 to 24, but the age range for senior discounts will remain unchanged.

The cap on match fees for away Premier League games will remain at £30, with top-flight clubs unanimously voting to keep it in place at a meeting in London last Thursday.

The price increase at Liverpool follows ticket price freezes at Anfield eight times in the past 10 seasons. The Reds said they had discussed ticket pricing through several meetings with the official supporters’ board.

The board of directors expressed the opinion that ticket prices should be frozen for two seasons, in line with the soccer supporters’ association’s campaign against ticket price increases. However, Liverpool said in a statement on their website that this was not viable.

“After careful consideration at several meetings, we have determined that this is not feasible in the competitive environment in which the club operates, as the club continues to invest on and off the pitch, and costs have increased beyond our control across the club,” the club said in a statement.

The Supporters Board criticized the move in a statement.

“We have been in direct discussions with the club since early February,” they said. “This follows a meeting with the club’s board and owners in October last year.

“We have consistently made our demands clear. In line with the Football Supporters Association’s ‘Stop the Loyalty Exploitation’ campaign, we have asked for a price freeze for two seasons and a commitment to work together to find an alternative that does not place additional burden on supporters.”

“We felt this was an opportunity for us to do what we expect from those who pride themselves on the fact that the club stands for ‘more’: to be different, to support fan loyalty and to work collectively on solutions that don’t come at the expense of supporters.”

Liverpool say the ticket renewal period will begin next week and details will be sent to season ticket holders in due course.
