The Black Cats had already won a game at the Stadium of Light earlier in the season, and were visiting the home of their fiercest rival for the first time in 12 years.

There was a heavy police presence outside the stadium, but reports emerged that some fans were involved in clashes just before the midday kick-off. Witnesses claimed that a small force of traveling Sunderland supporters shrugged off a police escort and entered the stadium, joining a large crowd of home fans.

This led to a violent confrontation, and the Daily Mail reported that one person was given CPR before being taken away.

The escort strategy mirrors that seen in last December’s comeback win at Sunderland and is expected to be adopted by the majority of away fans.

Those arriving later run the risk of having to wait at the station for a second police escort, and given the travel time and necessary security and ticketing checks, they unfortunately run the risk of not being able to take their seats in time for the 12pm kick-off.

Sunderland fans were therefore strongly advised to make every effort to arrive at Central Station before the 10.15am start time. Upon entering the station, Sunderland supporters were escorted to the starting point by officials and partners.

Photos later emerged of fans clashing with police outside the stadium, with at least one bottle thrown at the officer, who had to duck for cover.

Police were seen trying to quell a fight between two groups of supporters before they stormed the ground.

Once the game started, it didn’t take long for the home crowd to celebrate.

Nick Woltemade, who had a lapse of concentration while playing from the back, intercepted a pass and deflected it to Anthony Gordon, who opened the scoring 10 minutes later.

Source link

Violence broke out outside St James’ Park ahead of Sunday’s Tyne Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland.
