Bruno Fernandes was furious after being denied a “potentially game-changing” penalty in Manchester United’s 2-2 draw away at Bournemouth.<\/div>\n
An eventful second half at the Vitality Stadium saw the visitors twice take the lead through a Fernandes spot-kick and a James Hill own goal, but they were reversed again through a Ryan Christie goal and a Junior Crupi penalty. The latter penalty came after Harry Maguire was sent off.<\/p>\n
On the day he was recalled to the England squad, Maguire was penalized for pulling Evanilsson back inside the area, and it was a disappointing end to the night.<\/div>\n
His sending off and Crupi’s converted spot-kick meant Michael Carrick’s side could only take one point back north, giving the chasing pack of Aston Villa, Liverpool and Chelsea a chance to redeem themselves at the weekend.<\/p>\n
Fernandes was not happy at full-time as he spoke about the accident in which Amad went down in the box following a challenge from Adrian Truffert with United leading 1-0, but what would have been his team’s second penalty of the night was denied.<\/p>\n
“I’m disappointed because we tried hard enough to get the three points. We had to finish with a lot of pain and trying not to concede,” Fernandes told Sky Sports.<\/div>\n

“I’m frustrated with myself because we could have taken a 2-0 lead and then we conceded again. We didn’t get a penalty, and then (we) got a penalty. It’s the same situation as Amad. One is one, one is not.”<\/p>\n
“I know it’s difficult for the referee to award two penalties to the same team in one game, but I don’t understand why VAR isn’t involved in that situation or with Harry[Maguire]because either one is a penalty and the other is a penalty, or neither is a penalty.”<\/p>\n
“Amad is close to taking a shot, but he’s being pushed. You can see that something is completely off-balance for him. It’s frustrating for smaller players, because you always say smaller players are softer, but with bigger players they end up giving away fouls.”<\/p>\n
“I think in any other situation it would be a penalty, but in Amad’s case it was also a penalty and I think that could change the game.”<\/p>\n
Carrick agreed with his captain that the penalty decision was meaningless.<\/p>\n
“If you get one, you have to get the other. It was pretty much the same for me in terms of two-handed grabs, so he’s got one wrong anyway,” Carrick said.<\/p>\n
“I can’t get my head around giving one and not giving the other. It’s crazy. It puts them on the back foot, they score, and then it’s chaos, really.”<\/p>\n
Regarding the incident in question, Premier League Match Center said the correct decision had been made.<\/p>\n
“The referee’s no-penalty decision for Truffert’s challenge was confirmed by VAR and it was determined that the contact was not sufficient to constitute a foul,” they wrote in X.<\/p>\n
Andoni Iraola believed he had made the right decision.<\/p>\n
Bournemouth’s head coach said of the challenge to Amad: “We have the advantage now and we can watch the replay right away. I didn’t think there was anything going on in that game.”<\/p>\n
\u201cI think both Evanilson’s game and Matheus Cunha’s game are penalties because the defender loses his position, but Amad’s game is not a penalty at all.<\/p>\n
“We wanted a goal in the first half. Harry Maguire put his hands behind his back, but I don’t think that was enough of a penalty either. I don’t think there’s much to argue about.”<\/p>\n
As a result, Manchester United are now in third place with 55 points, four behind Villa, six behind Liverpool and seven behind Chelsea.<\/p>\n
Carrick’s appointment as interim head coach, replacing Ruben Amorim in January, has seen an upturn in form for the Red Devils, losing just one of their 10 games under him.<\/p>\n

Michael Carrick was unimpressed by the referee’s inconsistency against Bournemouth.<\/p>\n
“That has always been a part of the club and that will not change with the arrival of the manager. In the last few weeks we have been positive with the results. That gives the team a positive energy that makes them understand that they can go anywhere and get results,” Fernandes added.<\/p>\n
“We’ve been in very good form under Michael. We had to suffer today but we got a point. We got something out of it. What’s even better is that we can get the three points we didn’t get today in the next game.”<\/p>\n
“The Premier League is very tough and there is a lot of competition. Aston Villa are close to us, so are Liverpool and Chelsea.<\/p>\n
“Our goal is to move forward by continuing to score points. We have to escape by continuing to score points. The best way to do that is to continue to score points. If we want to get closer to the team in front of us, we still have to get the three points.”<\/p>\n
