The Premier League is expected to amend new spending rules that come into effect from the 2026/27 season to give clubs more flexibility in the transfer market. The Team Cost Ratio (SCR) rule was approved last November and is expected to be implemented this summer.

Clubs will be limited to spending 85% of their income on transfer fees, player wages and agent fees, although clubs could reach 115% depending on complex factors. Violations will result in a fine and six demerit points if the club’s expenditure reaches 115% of its income.

At Thursday’s general meeting, the club agreed to amendments in favor of clubs that follow the rules.

The new rules stipulate that if a club does not use 85% of their allowance for two seasons, they will be allowed to carry over up to 10% into the third year, avoiding fines for non-compliance thereafter.

The Guardian reports that Brighton & Hove Albion proposed the adjustments at a general meeting before Christmas.

According to the report, none of the current 20 teams in the top flight opposed the proposal, and it is expected to be officially introduced before the end of the season.

The ruling comes just over a week after UEFA officials raised concerns about the impact the new financial rules would have on the rest of Europe.

The governing body’s current SCR limit is 70%, which teams participating in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League must comply with.

Other leagues have stricter rules than the Premier League, raising concerns that continental clubs will be forced to take further risks to retain players.

The BBC claims the Premier League rejects these claims and insists the new rules will ensure competitive balance.

Despite UEFA’s concerns, the Premier League struggled in this week’s Champions League. Of the six clubs competing in the Champions League, only Arsenal and Liverpool made it to the quarter-finals.

Newcastle United lost 7-2 to Barcelona last night, while Tottenham lost to Atletico Madrid. Chelsea also lost to Paris Saint-Germain 8-2 on aggregate, while Manchester City lost to Real Madrid.
