Sheffield Wednesday continue to pay the price for former owner Digifone Chansiri’s disastrous reign and look set to struggle again next season.

The EFL is now dangerously close to putting the final nail in Sheffield Wednesday’s coffin, while Digiphone Chansiri’s disastrous reign has left one of English football’s oldest institutions in crisis.

The Owls are in the worst season in English football history, sitting bottom of the Championship with -6 points as they aim to reach hallowed ground zero with nine games remaining.

Wednesday received a total of 18 points for various offences, the majority of which were taken when the club went into administration in October.

This came after Owls supporters rallied to end Chansiri’s reign of terror, effectively ousting the despised former owner by withholding spending.

Thailand’s tuna king’s terrible mismanagement left only a handful of senior professionals on a team of outcasts and children on Wednesday.

They have only won the Championship once all season, a 2-0 win over Portsmouth at Fratton Park in September. They have yet to pick up three points against Hillsborough.

A consortium led by former professional poker player James Board was named as Christmas’s preferred bidder, but withdrew interest last month amid skepticism over whether it would pass the EFL owner and director test.

It subsequently emerged that Bode and others had offered a staggering £47.8m to take over the bankrupt club, a sum that comfortably exceeded the club’s true value.

The official line was that once committed, the consortium could not move forward with such a high fee. In fact, the bid was surrounded by red flags from the beginning.

However, the administrators had no choice but to accept this offer, considering that the club’s creditors were the final priority and Chansiri was their largest creditor.

If Board’s acquisition is successful, the Owls will avoid a 15-point penalty in League One next season. This was enough to ensure that creditors were paid 25 pence in the pound, or a quarter of the amount ultimately owed.

American business tycoon David Storch became the second party to be granted preferred bidder status, despite offering a much lower offer than Bode. Mr Storch, along with his son Michael and fellow investor Tom Costin, defeated former Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in the takeover race.

Storch’s bid does not meet the EFL’s creditor regulations, meaning Wednesday’s side are almost certain to start next season with -15 points. It sticks in my throat that the Owls are being punished for not paying the only man responsible for this mess.

But on top of that, the EFL is now threatening to maintain a framework that limits Wednesday’s wage claims in what looks to be a battle to prevent relegation to the Fourth Division for the first time in the club’s 159-year history.

Even if Storch’s bid passes the EFL’s due diligence test, which the organization believes it will, Wednesday faces the prospect of only being able to pay players a maximum of £7,000 a week and a salary cap of £7m a year. The club has already been banned from spending on transfer fees due to indiscretions under its previous owner.

In a series of social media posts on Friday night, the Sheffield Wednesday Supporters Trust revealed extracts from the EFL’s insolvency policy, which is not a document readily available to the public.

An excerpt from the document states that it only provides “guidance” and that “EFL reserves the right to review and amend procedures on a case-by-case basis.”

It added: “The EFL has absolute discretion as to how it deals with clubs that have entered or become insolvent.” The question is when, if at all, the discretionary power does not apply in the Sheffield Wednesday case.

This is a fan base and a community that has suffered enough. No one wants handouts or special treatment. All that is needed is a chance to compete on a level playing field and begin a recovery that will take years.

In a lengthy statement, the Supporters Trust said: “While further disciplinary action could result in Sheffield Wednesday being relegated for a second successive year, it will not punish those responsible for the club’s decline.”

“It would punish supporters, employees, players and the new ownership group for trying to save one of English football’s historic institutions.”

Mr. Storch has been making all the right noises since becoming the preferred bidder. He told the fans that they were the owners of the club and that he and his colleagues were just custodians.

He spoke about how fan engagement is central to his ethos, his plans to improve the aging stadium and practice field, and his investments in the squad.

Mr. Storch seems wide-eyed and desperate, and genuinely passionate about trying to restore Wednesday to its former glory.

But the fear supporters now have is that the EFL’s latest move means he and his party will walk away, leaving the club back to square one and their future hanging on the most precarious of threads.

Wednesday cannot remain in power forever. And if a potential new owner is not willing to abide by the EFL’s strict regulations, it could disappear completely.

EFL chief operating officer Nick Craig said: “The league would like Sheffield Wednesday to continue as part of the EFL, but ultimately the terms of the league’s insolvency policy will also need to apply.”

“This policy has been agreed with clubs and will act as a guide to all clubs and insolvency practitioners, and aims to balance the interests of Sheffield Wednesday as well as the other 71 clubs in the EFL.

“We remain open to continuing dialogue with our preferred bidders and administrators to find a solution that allows Sheffield Wednesday to continue as part of the league.”
