Javier Tebas spoke at the ISDE event and touched on several current issues. The president did not hold back and once again denied that Barcelona had given La Liga the OK to sign Messi, as confirmed by Xavi and Mateu Alemany. They also wanted to emphasize the message that La Liga is growing and they don’t like being fifth in Europe. “La Liga yes, they didn’t have it and they never asked us. If they weren’t even in Rule 1.1. It was impossible to say yes without knowing what Messi would charge and how that provision would further apply to that salary level. Tebas didn’t stop there. He had more time. In this sense, he wanted to demonstrate what his role was in relation to Europe, or at least his ideals as president. “I have a duty to protect the majority of players, the majority of whom will not be playing in European competitions or playing in the World Cup,” he said.<\/p>\n

Spreading Spanish football beyond its borders is one of La Liga’s medium-term goals.
