Thompson, who plays for Chelsea, received a cross from Jadyn Shaw and expertly slotted the ball into the top corner over the bar and out of the reach of Colombian goalkeeper Catherine Tapia. <\/p>\n
“I think this year has been a great year for Alyssa, both for club and country,” Hayes said. “I think the consistency of her play stands out to me in terms of being able to get things done over 90 minutes and being able to get it done game after game, including clutch moments like today. She’s been doing that all year long for Chelsea.”<\/p>\n
It was Thompson’s fourth international goal and earned her the tournament MVP award. She said when the ball left her foot, she wasn’t sure if it was a goal. <\/p>\n
\u201cI wanted to get another shot on goal, so I looked at it and put a shot over the crossbar,\u201d Thompson said. “That’s when I knew it was coming in.”<\/p>\n
The United States remained scoreless for 805 minutes. <\/p>\n
“I think we showed how to win when we’re not at our best. I think we showed versatility. I think we showed depth. I think we showed maturity,” Hayes said. “As a coach, I’m happy with those things. And of course I love the shutout, but more importantly, I love that we didn’t give up a lot of chances.” <\/p>\n
