Liverpool will play Galatasaray in the last 16 of the Champions League without away fans in attendance after the Turkish side were handed a disciplinary action by UEFA.

Their fans were barred from entering the second leg of the knockout stages at Anfield. This stems from accusations of fan misconduct during last week’s trip to Juventus, which included throwing objects, setting off fireworks and causing general mayhem.

There are also reports that a man and his daughter were injured when fireworks were set off at Juventus fans in Turin. As a result, the European governing body suspended Galatasaray from participating in the next European away day.

In addition to the ticket ban, UEFA’s disciplinary committee also fined the Turkish champions 40,000 euros for the fan’s actions. They attempted to appeal the aforementioned penalty, but it was rejected by UEFA’s appeals committee on Wednesday.

Galatasaray will host Liverpool in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Turkey on March 10, but whatever happens they will travel to England without any traveling support.

That can be important, especially if you have to protect a lead. Although Galatasaray are behind in the same standings, they have shown that they can compete on an equal footing with Europe’s powerhouses. In the final tournament, he scored two goals in extra time, defeating Juventus 7-5 on aggregate.

We were able to beat Liverpool again this season. That was when they hosted the Reds in Istanbul and Viktor Osimhen scored from the penalty spot to seal a memorable victory. “We know that we have to perform better in the away game than we did last time we were in Istanbul in September,” admitted Arne Slott.

A good performance in the Champions League will help Liverpool make amends from a season in which they have already surpassed the Premier League. Their only two hopes of winning a trophy are the European stage and the FA Cup, and they face Wolves in the fifth round on Friday night.

Last season, Liverpool, on their way to the title, were eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League. Although eventual champions PSG defeated Liverpool on penalties, one of Slott’s challenges was to mount another onslaught on the European stage. If they see off Galatasaray, the Reds will likely face either the Parisians or Chelsea.
