On Saturday night, Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty against Al Nasr, but it didn’t even reach the goal and he was sent off with an injury.

The Portuguese superstar is finally aiming for his 1,000th career goal, but he missed out on a golden opportunity. Ronaldo took a deep breath before making a hesitant run-up, but his shot went just wide of the post while the goalkeeper went the other way.

The veteran hung his head as he watched an 11th-minute spot-kick go past him, only to miss his second of the season from 12 yards remaining. He previously missed a penalty in October’s 5-1 win against Al Fateh.

It is the first time since the 2020/21 season that the former Manchester United star has missed two league penalties in one season. That happened when he was at Juventus, where he failed to convert against Atalanta and Inter Milan.

Ronaldo may have feared the worst when Abdulela Al-Amri’s own goal put Al Faiha ahead as they chase the Saudi Professional League title. However, they recovered with a rally in the second half.

A goal from Sadio Mane and an own goal from Mosquera turned the game around. Abdullah Al Hamdam scored the late winner and Al Nasr remained at the top of the table with 61 points, two points behind second place. But they will have to work hard on Ronaldo’s fitness.

After 70 minutes, he felt some discomfort in his muscles and was replaced by Al Hamdam. Despite his age, Ronaldo maintains incredible endurance and rarely stops a match midway through. His constant dedication to recovery allowed him to continue operating into his 40s.

Ronaldo’s failure from the penalty spot was the 35th failure of his career. He has scored just over 180 and has proven to be more than reliable from 12 yards. But such is his profile and stature that players who don’t play often make headlines, especially in important matches.

Former Liverpool and now Brentford goalkeeper Caoihin Kelleher denied him when he saved a penalty in an international match involving Portugal and the Republic of Ireland in recent years. During his second stint in Manchester, he also missed from 12 yards out in a shock penalty shootout defeat to Middlesbrough in the FA Cup.
