HENSOLL, Wales (AP) – VAR coverage was expanded Saturday to include corner kicks and a second yellow card.

The International Football Association Board’s annual general meeting also approved measures to speed up matches, including a “countdown principle” that applies to throw-ins and goal kicks.

Changes to be implemented at this year’s World Cup will allow video replays to check and review red cards resulting from “clearly incorrect second yellow cards” and overturn “clearly incorrectly awarded corner kicks” “provided the review can be completed immediately without delaying the restart”.

VAR can also look at misconceptions, where the referee penalizes the wrong team for an infraction, resulting in the wrong player being shown a red or yellow card.

IFAB also agreed to a trial to be carried out to further investigate delayed tactical injuries by goalkeepers in order to “stop this practice”.

last year, IFAB approves rule change This means that if the goalkeeper holds possession of the ball for more than eight seconds, the opposing team will be awarded a corner kick.

The same rules will now apply for throw-ins and goal kicks.

If the referee determines that either side is taking too long, a 5-second visual countdown will begin. If the ball is not in play at the end of the countdown, the throw-in will be awarded to the opposing team and the goal kick will instead be a corner kick for the opposing team.

In a further effort to speed up the game, substitutes must leave the field within 10 seconds of the substitution board being displayed. Otherwise, substitutes may not enter the field until the first stop after one minute of play.

Additionally, any player whose injury causes a delay in the game “must leave the playing field and wait one minute after play resumes.”

Consultation regarding playing against players who cover their mouths during face-offs

IFAB said it would hold a consultation process to develop measures to address players covering their mouths when confronting opponents during matches.

Benfica’s Gianluca Prestiani has been charged racial abuse Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior covered his mouth with his jersey during a recent Champions League playoff game.

Prestiani is Denies racial insults against Vinicius. he didn’t play He featured in Wednesday’s return match against Madrid after receiving a one-match provisional suspension from UEFA.

___
