aTigres UANL’s Argentinian goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman spoke on the podcast Milo de Atlas. What started out as an intimate space for chat and reflection has recently become a media event with special guest Lionel Messi.

For just over an hour, the Argentine star recalled key moments in his career, anecdotes that defined his path and episodes that landed him at the center of controversy. That included an unexpected showdown with one of the greatest figures in Mexican sport, world boxing champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

How did the fight between Messi and Canelo happen?

Tensions between the two sporting giants date back to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. At that time, the Mexican champions interpreted that Messi was thrown to the ground in the dressing room and kicked the Mexican national team shirt after an exchange with Andres Guardado, a historic player of the Mexican national team.

Saul “Canelo” Álvarez can’t sit idly by after a video of Messi allegedly disrespecting the Mexican national team’s uniform, with social network X posting a series of tweets expressing his displeasure with the Argentine star. A heated brawl ensued on social networks, with thousands of fans taking sides and the debate spreading to every corner of the digital world.

What did Messi say about his misunderstanding with Canelo Alvarez?

In the podcast, Messi soberly reflected on the episode, showing that beyond the controversy, he is beyond misconceptions.

That’s where the Mexican anger towards me starts, but the truth is it has nothing to do with it, it’s a normal situation in any game, any kind of post-game locker room. Anyone who plays football and understands locker rooms knows that that’s normal. I think it was a Guardado shirt.

lionel messi

You take off your shirt and put it there (on the floor), because it’s all sweaty, just like you, I also take off my shirt and put it there, it’s the most normal thing, and I think something very big was created after that that had nothing to do with it.

lionel messi

In the same podcast, Nahuel Guzmán also commented on the discomfort Mexicans may have towards the Argentine national team, saying that in all recent World Cups, with the exception of the last in Brazil and Russia, the Mexican team has been eliminated by Albiceleste, preventing the Mexicans from reaching the coveted fifth leg.
