Manchester United interim manager Michael Carrick has avoided directly criticizing Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s recent comments that Britain is “colonized by immigrants”. Mr Carrick, 44, spoke to reporters for the first time since Mr Ratcliffe shocked the nation with his views.<\/p>\n
United’s minority owner apologized for his “choice of words” and admitted he had “offended some people”, including reportedly a number of United’s stars, but anger over the billionaire’s views remains. Many branded him a hypocrite due to the fact that the majority of United’s squad was made up of players from outside the UK.<\/p>\n
There are reports that Ratcliffe’s indiscreet comments could cost United millions in new sponsorship deals, with the club now without a training kit partner and sleeve sponsor as their current deal expires at the end of the season. Before United’s away game against Everton, Carrick was asked for his thoughts on Ratcliffe’s words.<\/p>\n

United’s interim manager said: “Sir Jim made a statement and then the club made a statement. It’s not my place to add to that. I’ve been at this club for a long time and we have a huge impact on the world in one way or another and we have a responsibility for that.”<\/p>\n

In response to backlash over his comments, Mr. Ratcliffe released his own statement. The Ineos boss said: “I regret that my choice of words has offended some people in the UK and Europe, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth.”<\/p>\n
\u201cMy comments were made in response to questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where I was discussing the importance of UK economic growth, jobs, skills and manufacturing.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy intention was to highlight that the Government must manage immigration alongside investment in skills, industry and jobs so that long-term prosperity is shared by all. It is important that we maintain an open debate about the challenges facing the UK.\u201d<\/p>\n
