UEFA has launched a formal investigation after Vinicius Junior claimed he was subjected to racist insults during the Champions League play-off between Real Madrid and Benfica. But beyond the investigation of racism, another major topic emerged during the match. It’s the consistency of refereeing.

Fans claim that while UEFA’s anti-racism protocols were correctly invoked, some controversial decisions on the field were not treated with the same firmness.

Real Madrid’s alleged dirty play went unpunished

Several moments during the heated match were caught on camera and are now being shared online.

Eduardo Camavinga steps on the face of a Benfica player (card not shown).

Federico Valverde appeared to throw a punch during the collision (no red card was given).

Vinicius committed a tactical foul to prevent Ross’ shot (no second yellow card was given).

Instead, manager Jos Mourinho was sent off amid protests.

Racism investigation vs referee consistency

The alleged racist insult is currently undergoing a disciplinary review by UEFA. Vinicius reported that he was called a “monkey”, a racist slur that has historically been directed at black players in European football. The referee invoked UEFA’s anti-racism protocols and the match was suspended for nearly 10 minutes.

But critics say basic disciplinary consistency must also be maintained to protect the integrity of the competition.

Are anti-racism mechanisms strongly enforced?

Will violent and unsporting behavior be judged with the same consistency?

Do inconsistencies undermine trust in referees?

Surveillance of images circulating on the internet is being strengthened.

In a high-stakes Champions League match, awareness is as important as protocol. Referee performance evaluations are normally carried out within UEFA’s Refereeing Department.

UEFA is investigating allegations of racism against Vinicius Junior.

At the same time, many argue that this match exposed unresolved issues regarding refereeing consistency.

For some fans, the image itself says it all.
