JAmes Rodriguez’s signing with Minnesota United has been one of the biggest moves on the market in recent days, considering the Colombian midfielder’s career. The former Real Madrid player’s arrival in MLS has caused great excitement among fans, but some have viewed it negatively, especially due to the current state of the player. One of the most critical of James’s signing has been American legend Landon Donovan, who believes that the only thing that matters for the former Bayern Munich player is the proximity of the World Cup, although he never doubted Rodriguez’s quality.

Landon Donovan doubts James Rodriguez will join MLS

In a recent explosive edition of the Unfiltered Soccer podcast, American soccer legend Landon Donovan confessed his initial dissatisfaction with James’ move to Minnesota United.

Known for his outspokenness, Donovan didn’t hold back when discussing the contract with former teammate Tim Howard. The legendary player admitted his initial reaction was absolute rejection, fearing the league would revert to old patterns by signing veterans for name rather than long-term prospects.

I couldn’t hate it more. I thought, “This is the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.” Later, I found out that it was a six-month contract.

landon donovan sobre el fichaje de james

A major factor in Donovan’s softening of his stance was precisely the brevity of his contract. James, who joined from Mexico’s Club Leon, was originally under contract until June 2026, coinciding with the start of the World Cup.

Donovan concerned about James’ future in Minnesota

Donovan’s biggest concern is what happens after the World Cup lights go out. James Rodriguez remains the captain and driving force of the Colombian national team, and Donovan admits his motivation will make him a dominant player in the short term.

“That’s my biggest fear. You see it all the time in football. He comes in six months and he’s unbelievably good. He beats the league. And then Minnesota says, ‘Oh, what a great player. Let’s sign him for three years,’ and his level drops,” the former Los Angeles Galaxy player explained.

Despite the criticism, James Rodríguez knows he needs to make amends for his disappointing spells at Leon and Rayo Vallecano in Mexico. The Colombian wants to be in good shape for the World Cup and the next six months will be key.
