Soccer’s oldest final tournament.

National League North teams Macclesfield and Palace were 117 points apart in the standings when they played, making it officially the biggest upset in the 155-year history of the FA Cup.

It wasn’t a bad profit for local businessman Rob Smethurst. He said he barely remembers buying the club during a “four-day bender” six years ago.

“I was going through a bit of an addiction at the time,” said Smethurst, who had recently sold a successful business in the car industry. “I had no direction or ambition to really do anything, so I started hitting the bottle and things started going horribly wrong.”

While browsing a real estate website, I came across a listing for a local soccer team that went into liquidation in 2020 due to debts. He was not a lifelong fan and had no particular affinity for the football team.

“I don’t know why I wanted it, I just wanted it,” he said.

rise from the ashes

Macclesfield Town was founded in 1874 under its former name. At their peak in the 1990s, they reached the third tier of English football and competed against the likes of Manchester City. Over the years, that list of managers has also included former England stars Paul Ince and Sol Campbell.

However, it was on the brink of extinction until Smethurst’s intervention. He bought the stadium and assets and restarted it as Macclesfield FC.

Located in north-west England, Macclesfield is approximately 32 miles from Manchester and is a popular area for Manchester United and Man City fans.

Now, the Phoenix Crab, so called because it has risen from the ashes, is enjoying its moment in the spotlight thanks to its famous Giant Killing.

It became famous overnight and attracted new sponsors. In particular, sponsorship came from the real estate site Smethurst was browsing on that fateful day.

And there is a buzz surrounding the team that hasn’t been seen in many years.

Another Rooney

Macclesfield, led by the younger brother of England and Man United icon Wayne Rooney, have a chance to repeat their heroics against another Premier League team on Monday after drawing at home. brentford In the 4th round of the FA Cup.

Coach John Rooney, in his first year in charge, said, “As I said last time, if we perform, you never know what will happen.” “We are the overwhelming underdogs, there’s no question about that.

“We went into the Crystal Palace game thinking we needed a miracle, but the players on that day were outstanding and deserved to win. When you watch games between lower league clubs and Premier League teams, it’s always snatches and snatches, but I think our game was far from that.”

FA Cup upset

The FA Cup is notorious for upsets, especially in the early rounds when part-time players take on international superstars.

Wrexham were a fourth-tier team when they beat reigning league champions Arsenal in 1992, long before they were bought by famous owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mack.

In 1989, non-league side Sutton United overwhelmed top-flight side Coventry, who had won the FA Cup two years earlier.

As for Macclesfield, Smethurst admitted he thought his side could have been coming off a 10- or 20-goal defeat against Palace.

“I mean, who could have imagined that a football club like ours could beat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and pull off the biggest upset in football history?” he said.

Fans were queuing around Macclesfield’s 5,900-seater stadium to get tickets for the match. Unsurprisingly, the game against Brentford also had a full house.

more than money

Smethurst said the average fight prize money is about $27,000, while a third-round win is worth more than $500,000.

But owning a soccer team is about more than money, he says.

“I’m very proud of this town and what it represents. We have some great people here, some really special people. I think this club has been like the heartbeat of the whole community,” Smethurst said.

“When it actually broke, it destroyed so many lives. And I think subconsciously in my drunken state I realized that and thought maybe I could make a difference.”

Crucially, he says Macclesfield has made a big difference in his life.

“I was in a mess and you know what it did, it saved my life.”
