The complex competition format introduced last season means there is a lot of risk in each competition.

From this season onwards, the final standings of the league stage will become more decisive to allow the top teams to play the second leg at home for the remainder of the competition. And there’s another very important new feature. If a team loses a higher ranked opponent, that team’s seeding continues until the end.

Example: If a team ranked 7th beats a team ranked 1st in the quarter-finals, they will have the advantage of playing the second leg of the semi-final at home, even if their opponent is a team ranked 3rd or 4th in the league stage.

Another example: If the 14th place team eliminates the 3rd place team in the Round of 16, they will remain in 3rd place from that round forward and will play the second leg at home if they play the 5th or 6th place team in the quarterfinals. The top eight teams qualify directly to the Round of 16. Teams from 9th to 24th place will play a two-legged playoff to qualify for the last 16. (The lottery will be held on Friday the 30th). Teams ranked 9th to 16th will play teams ranked 17th to 24th, with the former having seeding rights and playing the second leg at home. Teams that finish between 25th and 36th place will be eliminated.

Rounds 16 onwards will be played in classic format. The winners of the play-offs will, as already explained, play against the top finishers of the league stage in a knock-out format with the characteristic that they will have home advantage until the final (18:00), which will be held on May 30th at the Puskas Arena in Budapest.

Only Arsenal and Bayern have already qualified for the round of 16, but 13 teams are guaranteed at least a place in the play-offs, with four teams mathematically expected to be eliminated. We analyze the final round options match by match, team by team. The order of matches in this analysis takes into account the current standings.

Arsenal – Khairat Almaty

Only Arsenal and Bayern are guaranteed to finish in the top eight. Arteta’s team will finish in first place even if they lose, unless the German team wins and makes up for the goal difference (currently +5). Kairat: The Kazakhs have retreated.

PSV vs Bayern

PSV: If we win, we will definitely qualify. A draw is likely to be enough. Even if they lose, they will need a lot of results to get ahead of their other rivals.

Bayern: Kompany’s team, already in the top eight, must at least draw to secure second place. If Arsenal win and Arsenal lose, they could go top of the table, but they will have to bridge the five-goal gap. If they lose and Real Madrid, Liverpool, or both win, they could drop to fourth place depending on goal difference.

Benfica vs Real Madrid

Benfica: To break into the top 24, Mourinho’s side need to win and hope for some positive results. difficult but not impossible

Real Madrid: A win guarantees a top-eight finish and at least fourth place. If Bayern loses and beats Bayern on goal difference, they could end up in second place, but that’s quite possible considering the Germans are only +2 at the moment (and +5 in favor of Liverpool, who would also be in the equation if they win). A draw would only result in a combination of unfavorable results and a top-eight finish due to some highly unlikely disaster. If they lose, there is a good chance they will be overtaken by six teams (out of the nine teams available) and fall out of the top eight.

Liverpool – Qarabag

Liverpool: The Reds are in a similar situation to Real Madrid in all scenarios, except for their lower goal difference (-5). If he wins, he will be in the top eight and at least fourth place.

Qarabag: They will almost certainly be in the 24 qualifying teams if they win and if they draw. Even if they lose, the result will be quite a disadvantage for them to be eliminated. Big surprise of the tournament.

Eintracht Frankfurt – Tottenham Hotspur

Eintracht: German troops retreated

Tottenham: A top eight finish is assured if Spurs win. A loss or a draw would effectively take them out of that elite group, as many teams would have to fail.

PSG – Newcastle

This is the only match of the 18 matches between two teams currently in the top eight. The worst that can happen for both sides is a draw. This is because there is a very high possibility that both will fall from 9th place.

Access to the top eight is not guaranteed to the winner until all final goal differences are known, but as of today they have a significant advantage (+10) compared to the rest in both cases.

naples – chelsea

Napoli: Before the start of the game, they are the first of the non-qualified eliminated teams (25). A win would almost certainly put them in the top 24. No doubt everyone in front of them has to win by a point or two, which is a lot

Chelsea: They sit on the edge of the top eight (8th place) and at least a two-goal difference may not be enough to win them, as teams like Barcelona and Manchester City are level on points with teams that are very close on goal difference and will face an opponent who they theoretically have plenty of room for.

Barcelona – FC Copenhagen

Barcelona: A comfortable win for Barcelona will give them a good chance of finishing in the top eight on goal difference. A draw might be enough, but they will need some of Chelsea, Sporting, Manchester City, Atletico and Atalanta to advance. And the match between PSG and Newcastle will not end in a draw. If we lose, we will fall from 9th place to below.

Copenhagen: Two places out of the top 24 for the Danes. They must win at the Spotify Camp Nou and expect failures elsewhere.

Athletic Club vs Sports CP

Athletic: They are the next to last of the players to be classified in the future (23 players). Barring some sci-fi combination of results and goals, the Lions can move into the top four with a win. In the case of a draw, you’ll probably need to use a calculator as a lot depends on what happens in the match. If you lose, you lose 95% of the time. Olympiakos or Ajax will definitely overtake them, and they will need all of the following teams to beat (or not beat): Napoli, FC Copenhagen, Club Brugge, Bodo Grimt, Benfica, Paphos, Union Saint Giroise.

Sporting: To break into the top eight (10th), we need to win, preferably with a good goal difference. In case of a draw or loss, you will be sent to an additional knockout round.

Manchester City vs Galatasaray

City: Josep Guardiola’s side need to beat the Turks by as much goal difference as possible to break into the top eight. They currently sit in 11th place with a goal difference of +4, level with Sporting (+5), Barcelona (+5), Chelsea (+6), Newcastle (+10) and PSG (+10). Given that the latter two are facing each other, they will definitely overtake one of them (or both in case of a draw). They need to improve their goal difference with two of the remaining three nations (Sporting, Barcelona and Chelsea), or one or more of them must move up in the standings. They also need to maintain their advantage over Atalanta (+1) and Atlético (+3), who also have 13 points. A draw or a loss would see City advance to the play-offs.

Galatasaray: They will start from 17th place. If they win, they will qualify for the top 24 spots. Unless something goes wrong, a draw or loss will determine the breakthrough.

Atlético vs Boddo/Glimt

Atlético: Simeone’s calculations to avoid the play-offs are very simple. They need as big a win as possible to improve their current goal difference (+3) compared to teams with the same points (13): Manchester City (+4), Sporting (+5), Barcelona (+5) and Chelsea (+6). As in previous cases, it should be noted that in a head-to-head match between PSG and Newcastle (also with 13 points), PSG will have the advantage as one of them (or both in case of a draw) will definitely drop points. In case of a draw or loss, Atlético will advance to the play-offs.

Bode/Glimt: Norway’s Surprise Package needs to win and see other results to make it into the top 24. They are currently in 28th place.

Union Saint Giroise – Atalanta

Union Saint Giroise: The Belgian needs wins and a long run of good results in other games to break into the top 24

Atalanta: Of the eight teams vying for a spot in the top eight, they are tied with 13 points and have the worst goal difference. It’s probably best for them to focus on a win to secure their seeding in the playoff draw and play the second leg at home.

Borussia Dortmund – Inter

Dortmund: The Germans still have a chance to finish in the top eight, but it would be more logical to finish between 9th and 16th and only need three points to be seeded in the play-off draw. A draw could see them drop between 17th and 24th, with a loss likely the latter. Even if you lose, it’s almost impossible to get eliminated.

Inter: The Italians need just one point (12) to secure their place in the top 24, so they must secure their seeding. Getting into the top eight is not a pipe dream.

Monaco vs Juventus

Monaco: If they win, they will become a top 24 team (currently 21st). In the case of a draw, there is a possibility of elimination if the series of results is unfavorable. If you lose, depending on the result, your chances of being eliminated are higher than your chances of qualifying.

Juventus: The Bianconeri are in almost the same situation as Inter, with the same number of points (12), but with a worse goal difference than Inter (+6 to their arch-rivals’ +4). Being in the top 8 is a dream come true, so if they win the match against the Principality, they are expected to get seeded in the lottery.

Club Brugge – Olympique Marseille

Club Brugge: The Belgian starts in 27th place. It may not be enough, but it’s logical that a win would earn them a spot in the top 24. This is because they are certain to immediately surpass their direct rivals OM by an additional two points. If the favorable results continue, a draw would be enough.

Marseille: De Zerbi’s French team (currently 19th) would qualify with a win and have a chance of seeding (albeit not much), but a draw is also very likely. Even if they lose, some adverse outcome would have to go against them to be eliminated.

Bayer Leverkusen – Villarreal

Leverkusen: Like OM, the Germans will qualify with a win, but there is little chance of them being seeded (9-16). A draw would probably be enough, and if we lose, we’ll have to wait for the result.

Villarreal: Lost by just one point after seven games.

Ajax – Olympiakos (21:00)

Ajax: The historic Dutch team is the last team that could finish in the top 24 (32nd place, -12 goals). They have a chance to say the least…they logically need three points to win, and three points for most of the 13 teams who can either draw or lose. Utopian is an understatement.

Olympiakos: Mendilibar’s team is also strangely the last team in the top 24 today. This is not mathematical, as there are teams with the same points behind them (Napoli and FC Copenhagen), but normally the Greeks qualify with a win, as they can slip one or several of the teams above them. The same can be said about ties. There’s a little more chance of being left behind, but it might be enough. But if you lose, everyone behind you either slip up or go home.

Paphos – Slavia Prague

Paphos: The Cyprus team, which had a great run under coach Juan Carlos Calcedo before moving to Russia, needs wins and many good results to break into the top 24. There are 11 teams in front of them and they must overtake at least six of them. Complex is an understatement.

Slavia Prague: Defeated.

Source link

TThe Champions League group stage concludes on Wednesday with an exciting final match of 18 games played simultaneously (21:00 CET).
