Tributes have poured in for a soccer player who collapsed and died during a match in Portugal. Nasr Bassem, 27, suffered a cardiac arrest while playing for his team LGC Moncarapacense in Olhão, Algarve, against Immortal DC.

He collapsed in the 27th minute of last night’s Algarve Cup third round match, with medical staff from both teams and the club medic attempting to resuscitate the left-back. Emergency services arrived and efforts were made to resuscitate him, but Bassem was pronounced dead at the scene.

His club, in Portugal’s fourth division, announced his death on Instagram late last night. Their post included a photo of him wearing the kit.

The club also issued a separate statement regarding the footballer, a former SC Braga youth player of Angolan descent who was born in the Portuguese coastal city of Aveiro. “Nasr’s departure came too soon, leaving an immeasurable void at our club and for everyone close to him on and off the field. He was an athlete, a colleague and a man who will always be part of our family.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to our family, friends and loved ones at this moment of profound sadness. We appeal to the entire LGC Moncalapacciense family, players, technical team, staff and management for unity, strength and mutual support at this very difficult moment that will be forever etched in our history.”

LGC Moncala Paracense president Nemesio Martins said: “There are no words. It is a very difficult moment for everyone. We deeply regret what happened to our player Nasr Bassem. It happened suddenly. There was no time to do anything.”

“These photos capture the moments Nasr Bassem lived at Lusitano Gym Club Monkarapaschen, his dedication, his passion, his smile, his battle on the field. He left too soon, but his footprint will forever remain on this club and on all those with whom he shared beaches, lawns and lives.”

“Nasr will always be part of the history and family of Lusitano Gym Club Moncalapacciense. He will never be forgotten. See you soon.”
